As I started thinking about it more, I think I may keep Passenger but move it elsewhere in the setlist, most likely towards the end still. I guess my issue is that, while a lot of my favorite songs from this band are their moodier and atmospheric songs, I love the dynamic that those are presented in alongside jams like Royal, Rocket Skates, Raptute, Korea, Bloody Cape, Hexagram, blah blah blah, so I feel like it's important to keep that dynamic in my playlist.

It's a lot of fun though. I'm really struggling right now but I think I'll have it all figured out tomorrow and might post the updated version then.

Honestly, Deftones are one the hardest bands to do playlists for. Their output is so consistently amazing and covers so many styles, and yet in putting them all together in playlist you also find that a lot of them kind of accomplish the same purpose, and you don't wanna repeat yourself. I've tried several times over the years to put one together and this is the only one so that actually came together quickly and smoothly.

That said, there's a Third Eye Blind mix I've had for years that kills.

For you and anybody else interested, here is my updated playlist. I like this one more, for sure. I created this playlist with a live setting in mind, but I also wanted it to flow well as songs transition between each other for just casual listening to.

    1. Korea
    2. Royal
    3. Rocket Skates
    4. Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)
    5. My Own Summer (Shove It)
    6. Sextape
    7. Tempest
    8. Digital Bath
    9. You've Seen The Butcher
    10. Hearts/Wires
    11. Bloody Cape
    12. Rosemary
    13. Phantom Bride
    14. Rubicon
    15. Passenger

    Encore:
    16. Beware
    17. Hexagram

I think the playlist is able to achieve both well for the most part. I picture a break after Royal for Chino to give his pleasantries to the crowd before the band rips into the next three songs. Another break would occur after My Own Summer, as the setlist makes an atmospheric shift starting with Sextape. The transition between Sextape and Tempest feels jumpy, but the obviously wouldn't be the case live. I think the transition of Tempest into Digital Bath would be really cool live, as Tempest has a decently lengthy outro that I think could blend right into the opening ambience to Digital Bath as Abe would kick things off with the into to Digital Bath. The next break would occur after Digital Bath, marking You've Seen The Butcher to lead off the next batch of songs that would also include Hearts/Wires and Bloody Cape before another break. I think the flow of Rosemary, Phantom Bride, and Rubicon is really great. I also think if the band made the feedback at the end of Rubicon persist longer, it'd be a really cool intro way to blend into the opening ambience to Passenger. The main set ends there and they'd come back for Beware and Hexagram leaving the crowd in fucking ruins.

Nice, man! I still need to give this playlist a spin, but already I much prefer the order. Hexagram would be such a badass song to close out on!

And I don't think the Sextape/Tempest transition is jumpy. Makes a lot of sense to me.

I think you also highlighted our different approach to these playlists. I usually try to image them as an 'album' of sorts, which gives me a bit more flexibility in the types of songs I can include (that's why I started and ended with different versions of Be Quiet; served as a nice little bookend.) Never really tried imagining these as a setlist. Maybe I should though...

I guess I'd have a tough time making a playlist to imagine it as an album because I already have these individual albums I either like or love, at least from Deftones. Creating a playlist to imagine as a live set makes it fun for me because the songs almost take on a new life.

I'm having a tough time understanding why they're only playing two songs off of Gore so far on this tour. Pretty much every set list I've seen has them only doing Prayers/Triangles and Rubicon, with some cities getting Hearts/Wires either in full or as an intro. I get that they're probably aware that the album was pretty divisive, especially among the ever-growing meathead faction in their crowd, but they don't strike me as the kind of band that gives a fuck. We're talking about a group that closed their Warped Tour '98 set with Mascara.

    Mascara.

I'm due to see them in August (unless my son arrives a week early, which, he probably will just to mess with me haha), but I was really hoping to experience some of the transcendent new stuff live. I figure songs like Gore and Xenon would work really well live without the crowd getting too restless. I always love their live show no matter what they play, but I just hope they switch it up as the tour rolls on because the set is looking pretty much like it has for the past two years.

Stephen's said that they're only playing two songs from Gore because they live too far apart to rehearse much.

Which isn't really good enough given that they've been sitting on this album for a year.

It really sucks they couldn't include more. Hope they can later this summer of I go to see them. I've never seen them before so I guess any set would be fine for me, but I'd really like to see at least four songs from Gore make it in, preferably five.

I wish they would close with Mascara now. I've seen them 14 times and yes, the set lists have been very repetitive as of late. I don't get it either. I mean, I'm not really big on Gore, but tour the album at least.

Yeah it seems weird that they're playing so few Gore tracks. Apart from being a bit divisive among fans, it seems to be a critically and commercially successful album. The title track would destroy live.

Phantom Bride, Acid Hologram, and the title track would be lovely live.

These alongside Prayers/Traingles, Hearts/Wires, and Rubicon would honestly be perfect.

Acid Hologram is the first song (at least in a while) that makes me wonder: could they pull that one off live? It's just so so huge and yet delicate that it seems like a tricky song to perform.

But yeah, I would love for that to become a set staple in the future.

If that's the case, then it makes sense, but it still sucks to hear. I'm guessing it must've been a scheduling thing, because otherwise they could've all flown in to LA from their respective cities two weeks before the tour in order to get the new material ready to go.

Phantom Bride feels like one of those songs that will never get played live unless they share a bill with Alice in Chains.

I'm falling more and more in love with Gore. It just seems to sink further under my skin every time I listen to it. The lyrics are stunning at times, Abe's drum parts are as brilliant as ever, Frank's performance is so subtle and so wonderful, Chino's vocal melodies are great. I thought it might get in my top five albums of the year but right now I think it will be challenging for top spot. It's grown on me in such a wonderful way.

  20. I still really enjoy Gore and think it's one of their best. Time will tell if that holds true, though.

I listened to Gore earlier this week from start to finish for the first time in a few weeks and I still love it. The stretch from (L)MIRL to Rubicon is seriously great. I'd say the only weak spot is Pitture Infamante, but even that one is good. This will probably be a top 10 album for me this year.

@Deathco_019 That run of songs is one of the best in their catalog. I have to say Pitture Infamante has recently emerged as one of my favorites. It doesn't sound like anything they've done before, in my opinion.

It's probably my second favorite stretch of songs they've ever done, right behind the first four tracks from SNW. I'll have to pay closer attention to Pittura though. Hearts/Wires is just such a high point on the album for me that Pittura has a tough time standing out to me between it and the back half of the album.

Pittura Infamante might be in my top three tracks on this album. Intro is so cool, there's some nice Bjork-esque vocals from Chino at points and the guitar breakdown at 2:20 is great.
