That's why I love it. SNW was my first Deftones record and that was a standout song to me as a 20 year old. Seeing them open the set at my first Deftones show with that track was absolutely a highlight. This was 2007 I think. Maybe 06. That was an Unhinged, feral, pit. Core memory. Xerces is also a standout simply because me, the gf (now wife), and a friend went to a strip club in Minneapolis in 2010 and a dancer randomly did her routine to Xerxes. I mean, it worked.
Kimdracula is not only an underrated track on SNW but their entire discography. Can't help but stupidly smile at that absolutely nasty, opening riff
it’s a very minor thing but my favorite part of Rats!Rats!Rats! is the little pinch harmonic that happens at the end of the intro right before the vocals come in.
Rats and Rapture both seem like their most genuine attempts at janky angular post hardcore and I love them both for that reason
Saturday Night Wrist was never my favorite but I do love Kimdracula. I should give the whole thing a spin soon, been listening to a lot of Self-Titled this week.
Yeah it’s been a long time since I’ve listened to that album front-to-back but SNW has some of my favorites on theirs. Cherry Waves is easily a top 10 track for me
I was somewhat surprised they didn't play Cherry Waves on this tour, considering how much that song blew up on TikTok. I wouldn't expect them to "chase a trend" per se, but I thought they might've played it anyways.
Went back to Gore recently. It’s such an interesting album for them, mixing aside. Doomed User and the title track have an almost raw, punk influence. Pittura and Xenon are super weird for the band. Prayers, Acid, LMIRL, and Phantom are classic Deftones. Rubicon started the band’s streak of sort of upbeat and “happy” sounding closers.
The most recent two are still my least favorites. There’s more highs on Ohms (radiant city!) but I still find a lot of it hard to get into.
Agreed. Might be a controversial opinion, but I think the band’s sound peaked on KNY (and trust me, I adore White Pony), which is why I’m particularly excited they’re working with Nick R. again.
