First time I ever listened to Gore was on a plane. Hearing the intro to Hearts // Wires in the air is a memory I hold very close to my heart.
are we listening to the same song? because the version of Crest that comes up on YouTube is essentially a 1:1 Deftones version of that song update: looks like someone mislabeled this one as Crest
Gore is good. every album by this band is at least good. I do think it is probably overall their weakest effort and definitely their worst sounding album. I manage to find new things to enjoy in the album each new listen, but I do also have my issues with certain aspects of the songwriting throughout and that hasn’t really changed. there are exceptions to this, but overall I just don’t think Chino’s melodies on the album are his strongest, and some moments just feel like they needed some more time in the oven. some of the songs just plod along, and even some of my favorites on the album don’t feel like they reach their full potential, even if just because of the weak production. I need to hear this. damn.
Yeah that's just someone's full band reworking of Found. Crest is a totally different song. Chino tweeted this screenshot from his private Insta while he was working on Gore...the lyric snippet in the caption (if you click on the screenshot) is from Crest.
I rarely revisit Gore and I echo the feeling that some songs plod along. That said, it suddenly gets my attention with the last three tracks, ending the whole thing on quite a high. Makes me wish I could say the same for the rest.
Also this is triggering a memory. I used to set songs as alarm clocks back in college and Rubicon was the very last time I did that. The production being what it is combined with the phone I had at the time made for a very harsh and loud way to wake up lol
I always love when I randomly visit a thread or a thread gets a random post bump and reminds me to revisit something. Been spinning Gore most of the afternoon and somehow forgot how great “Phantom Bride” is. I’ve always considered Deftones to be a favorite band of mine but have always had trouble remembering what’s on each album outside of White Pony, self-titled and some other songs here or there. Part of that confusion for me might also be that Deftones maybe more than any other artist, has a pretty consistent shuffling of what I think I like best or is their best. In some ways White Pony will always be #1 for me but then I’ll go several months listening to nothing but KNY and Diamond Eyes, and then it will be nonstop ATF and Ohms or something. Always seems to be changing but WP and KNY are always high up on the list that isn’t like 1-10 but more like 1A, 1B, and 2nd place lol
You have my attention. How’d you even get two and a half minutes of Crest? I thought it was completely unreleased. I never thought it’d see the light of day.
Does anyone else remember when there was some rumored cover art of Gore before the official one was revealed? The official one is great but I remember thinking that other one was neat in a very different way, it was much darker and I think was like a person's face/head with some rain droplet-like filter over it? I could be misremembering lol
Chino used to have an account on this audio broadcasting site called Mixlr and would sporadically stream late at night. I think he initially did it around 2013, then stopped, then got a new account around the start of 2020. Tight, semi-secret community, usually about 50-60 people listening. He would mainly play music he liked, old and new — a lot of stuff I've got into in the last 4-5 years can be tracked back to those broadcasts...dude has the sharpest taste in music — but would occasionally drop snippets or even whole songs he'd been working on, sometimes looped over itself or over another song as a tease, sometimes just on its own. One night he played six or seven songs from Ohms, a couple of months before it was even announced. He played snippets of old practice sessions from Gore, new finished and unfinished Crosses stuff, feature tracks that hadn't been released. And Crest. Deleted his account about three years ago.
those were good days. I must’ve missed Admiral Angry tho, but thanks to your post I checked them out and I’m glad I did. thanks for mentioning
