Anyone here who hasn't heard their Song Exploder podcast episode about the Ohms single should get on that. Chino has sharp clarity on the emotion each aspect of the song elicits and on the various choices they made in the songwriting.
I absolutely believe that. It is far and away the least beloved album in their catalog. (Maybe other than Adrenaline.) Y'know, I'm not saying I'm right (because opinions can be neither right nor wrong!) but I ran my Minerva take past the most passionate Deftones fan I know, and their response: "I don't tend to get very riled up about takes like that, but I tend to agree that it's a little boring. I need to be in the mood for it more than other songs in the catalog." I do not understand that complaint. DE is one of their best sounding records.
I use to skip it because I was young and stupid until I saw them perform it live during the 2003 tour. That was spellbinding. Instantly became one of my favorites. This version from their 2003 Wembley show is something you gotta see.
I don’t like the production on DE. It’s just so loud and I wish the songs would breathe a little more. I know there isn’t a ton of space to work with on most of those songs, but everything sounds so condensed to me Great album regardless though
Figure this should make some folks here happy. https://www.facebook.com/dumbrecord...TsdNEcob6YCoqKDjiA6Ri7NbDsU6igtMjcTaVae2dX7Gl
Sent that question to my friend and didn't hear back right away, which surprised me. Turns out that's because they spent a week writing a ten paragraph reply not just about "Mascara" but also about the sound of Self-Titled, where "Minerva" fits into it, and a list of Top 10 Songs For Deftones Novices Who Like Minerva he made. Short version: he likes "Mascara" but doesn't seek it out all the time. Same as me. In an effort to leave no stone unturned, I ran my "Minerva" take past another Deftones friend. Their response: "Yeah, it's a pretty song for sure but sleepy as hell." Team Sleep is definitely not boring. The best of the Chino side projects.

Sorry for the bump. I’ve been aware of Pinback for a while now being a big Team Sleep fan. Listening to their discography for the first time though and holy shit they’re fantastic!
Wouldn't really call Chino's singing moaning. I honestly couldn't tell if the emote was a crying face or a big mustache. Either way!
