I really like the Black Stallion remix album as a whole, and I'm not really a remix guy at all. It's a really fun way to hear new interpretations of songs I already know so well.
Agreed, that opening drum beat is the best thing about it. I dunno man, there's certain DT songs that sort of center themselves on one of Chino's languid, slightly atonal melodies (like Minerva) that don't really do it for me. The Cure are a great band who, like Deftones, have their fair share (maybe more than their fair share tbh) of boring songs.
"minerva" is a fantastic song wtf. the guitars crash in like the wave of fire at the end of knowing at half speed
Chino and Robert Smith's song on the last Crosses album is beautiful. Best song on that album for me.
Just listened to Gore again. Good record. Those first three tracks are untouchable, "Doomed User" in particular. And I LOVE "Phantom Bride." Love how heavy that ending is.
The bookends of the album really carry it for me. Prayers / Triangles -> Acid Hologram -> Doomed User absolutely rules and so does Gore -> Phantom Bride -> Rubicon Everything in between bogs the album down a bit for me. Not that I think there’s a bad song in the bunch because there’s not, but none of those songs reach the quality of the bookends for me
Gore and Ohms are great albums. I cant name an album that isnt good by Deftones. I will say my least favorite beleive it or not is SNW
Ran through self-titled and you are absolutely out of your mind if you think "Battle-axe" is boring. That clean part at the beginning of the song alone justifies its existence. "Good Morning Beautiful" and "When Girls Telephone Boys" are crazy underrated
I also understand some of the complaints about the production being too "clean" on Diamond Eyes, but I just used "CMND/CNTRL" for a music league I'm in (not this site's) and I swear that song is louder and harder than anything else on the playlist. That album is heavy as fuck. The guitars literally sound like chainsaws (complimentary) lol
Speaking of CMND/CNTRl.... the song before it......Royal.....I can't believe they played that at Coachella weekend 2. Ending of that song is unhinged and Chino sounded amazing in the clip I saw.
For every new album I get excited for the closer because nearly every one they have written is a banger. I was a little bummed when they released it as a single for the Ohms cycle though. Chino if you are reading please don't do that again.
Such a sick single though, that major key riff is almost unlike anything else in their entire discography one of their best songs, period
I think Diamond Eyes really showcased Frank's work in a way that they really hadn't before. He brings so much to their songs.
