What I love so much about the self-titled album is how much they will just sit on a riff. It creates such a heavy, aggressive vibe at times, and a deeply hypnotic and atmospheric vibe at others. Minerva and Battle Axe captures both of those feeling so perfectly for me
I feel like I can never really pinpoint and determine which Deftones album my favorite, but I think self-titled would take that title. They created such a great sound on this album. Lot of my favorite tracks are on that one too
Self-titled is top fourz maybe top three depending on the day. An absolute high in a consistently good-great discography. SNW is definitely their worst after Adrenaline, though. Even with "Hole in the Earth" maybe being their best opener.
Two things. The three tracks I called out from that list are all from the self-titled: Minerva, Battle-Axe, and Deathblow. Love those cuts. However, I will equally not abide SNW slander. Hole In The Earth, Beware, Cherry Waves, Xerces, Kimdracula... all solid Deftones cuts. In summary, Deftones are the bees knees. If I had to choose my least favorites though, it would be a tie between Gore and Ohms. I feel like they've become less accessible for me as time has passed.
Adrenaline is easily their worst album. Most dated with a few good songs. It's the Pablo Honey of their discogrpahy
Self-titled is The Last Jedi of their discography - some of their highest highs mixed with some of their lowest lows. SNW was my first Tones album, so that's definitely part of it. But I love that record because it's one of the few I've heard where each song is a truly distinct entity. The way each of them build and crescendo is amazing to me. It's what my favorite Deftones records are - diverse yet elegant. S/T is diverse too, sure - but I've always struggled with songs that just sorta stay in one place. That's what my list mainly represents - songs that my mind has always started to wander on. I also don't get how anyone who likes "Lucky You" wouldn't like "Pink Cellphone"... though I love "Pink Cellphone" and hate "Lucky You," so I suppose there is something different about them. Mostly, I think too many people let the gross out comedy outro overshadow the actual song.
I think Chino's vocals are maybe the roughest they've ever been on SNW. his screams sound rough on Ohms, too, but I think they fit that record better.
The best song off SNW is Rivière. That album has some great tracks, but it’s very much the product of the chaos in the band at that time, and that hurts it tremendously.
I never got around to finishing my Deftones discography run because I have little to no interest in listening to Adrenaline, even though I don’t think it’s a bad album from the handful of times I’ve listened to it over the years Anyway, here’s where I’m currently at with their discography and also my favorite songs from them: White Pony Diamond Eyes Deftones Koi No Yokan Ohms Saturday Night Wrist Gore Around The Fur Adrenaline 1. Digital Bath 2. Battle-Axe 3. Rosemary 4. Passenger 5. You’ve Seen the Butcher 6. Beware 7. Minerva 8. Korea 9. Royal 10. Tempest 11. Knife Prty 12. Sextape 13. Bloody Cape 14. Hole in the Earth 15. Hexagram 16. Error 17. Diamond Eyes 18. My Own Summer 19. Phantom Bride 20. Genesis
I think Fireal is pretty tremendous too. Foreshadows a little of what was to come, and is very different from the rest of the tracks on there.
Adrenaline has grown on me with each listen, there’s some really awesome shit to be found on that record. that said, it is bottom three for me, along with Gore and Diamond Eyes (sue me), but I would honestly sooner reach for Adrenaline than those two even if I don’t necessarily think it’s better than them per se. 100% and the way Abe grooves throughout the whole thing just really seals the deal to me
I could go either way between Ohms and SNW these days, as well as Gore and ATF, but right now I prefer Ohms and Gore in those matchups (for lack of a better word)
I’m not sure I can make a ranking, but the only things for certain are that White Pony is #1, and that SNW and Gore are my least played albums. Not sure if they’re my least favorite, just my least played.
