Beware and Hole in the Earth are the ones on SNW for me, but I’ve also got big love for Cherry Waves, Rivière, and Xerces
Hexagram is my favorite Deftones song period so it def wins that contest for me. outside of that it’s a real tough call, they consistently knock it out of the park with their openers.
Swerve City is pretty good too, and even though I know it wasn't originally on the album and the band kind of looks down on it, I have a soft spot for Back To School.
They've generally done a great job of opening tracks. My Own Summer, Diamond Eyes, Genesis all S tier songs.
Too many good openers to name a best one. My Own Summer, Hexagram, Hole in the Earth, Diamond Eyes, Swerve City… I mean come on. Even the ones I didn’t mention are good to great.
Feiticeira. I've been a Deftones fan for about 15/16 years or something, and that song blows me away even more than it did when I was an impressionable 13 year old. All the bands now, the rock bands, the metalcore bands, who write whole songs or sections in songs trying to ape Deftones will never fucking write a song that, in combination, is as fluid, and graceful, and heavy, and trippy, and creepy, and huge, and cool as Feiticeira. The dingy, eerie masochistic imagery on top of that instrumental bed, with that somehow frenzied yet effortless liquid vocal performance, is magic. Everyone's on the top of their game on that song.
It's the swagger too; the hazy intoxicated swagger. When Abe, Stef, and Chino lock in on that, it's unbeatable.
Lhabia is so sick. I think MX is also kind of underrated living in the shadow of having Damone attached to it, which is such a fan favorite.
Feiticeira is probably my favorite opener overall, but My Own Summer might win based on Abe's drum intro alone. So simple and so badass.
My Own Summer is a GOATed into track. It’s really a slap in the face of “look what you’re getting into.” At least that’s how it felt when I first listened to that album in high school
