Don’t get me wrong. I love those albums. I just hate the way they both sound because they’re both absurdly loud
I mean, I have to lol. I also just don’t think those albums have much dynamic range and breathing room like some of their other albums have
there’s def a difference between listening to a record insanely loud and mixing/mastering an album insanely loud honestly been a while since I have listened to either record, and certainly not since getting into production myself and developing a more discerning/critical ear for the stuff, but I have no doubt you’re on the money here. unfortunately, it’s also something I am used to hearing in the majority of modern recordings.
Pretty much every Deftones album, not just the Nick ones, is brickwalled. There's no dynamic range to the way Ohms is mixed and mastered either, and that's a Terry Date one. It works for them.
I was kidding about the "turning my music up" thing, but I honestly don't have an ear for production, I guess. I've never noticed an issue with those albums before, and if I went back to them now, I doubt I'd notice anything. It takes a really bad recording job for me to really factor it into my enjoyment. The worst I've ever heard is from a band called Esoterica on their album The Riddle. Sounds like they ran their album through a shredder.
I definitely don’t think DE and KNY sound awful. I just think they could definitely sound better. That’s all. This band is clearly going to work with their buds for the vibes and I can’t blame em. Vibes matter
I think both of those records sound beautiful and intentionally different than Date's mixing but I'm also not claiming to be a production expert
Y’all are crazy, the open and airiness of KNY makes it one of my favorite sounding albums ever. Surprised they’re going back to him, since I think Chino? Said during that recording session Nick seemed a little preoccupied and half-assed the production in their eyes. Maybe that was the song consultant side of the job.
I mean, to be fair, this is incredibly normal and really honestly for the best. for the most part it’s really just obsessives and professionals who stress this stuff/can hear it or even care. and having ears that are sensitive or trained to hearing the minutiae of it all can be a detriment to the listening experience. I still definitely think it’s something valid and worthy of being.critical of for those who have that ear, as recording is an art form in its own right and criticism can be greatly valuable in art. fwiw I vastly prefer how KNY sounds to how DE sounds, a lot of that is just in the vibe and the songs themselves too. but I also just generally prefer Date’s work with the band, sonically to anything they’ve done with others.
isn't the vinyl/audiophile mix of KNY intentionally different than what's on CD and streaming? like it's a slightly lower volume to better capture some of the less-audible dynamics in the original mix? i know you can pick it up on Qobuz.
Just keep it away from Matt Hyde and I’m good, if I can’t hear Abe’s kick and snare fuckin crack what’s even the point
Curious to find out who handles the bass duties this time. Sergio pulled some of his most memorable work on Ohms, and it'd be a shame to not get more iconic bass riffs and licks anymore. Just the one thing I'm concerned about.
I’ll really miss that 5 string bass (or was it a baritone guitar?). It brought such a cool middle ground to guitar/bass, especially in a song like Hearts/Wires.
it was a Fender Bass VI, it’s considered a bass but it’s kind of its own animal. 6 strings, tuned an octave below a guitar’s standard tuning, but with a shorter scale length and string spacing that’s closer to a guitar than a typical bass and it kinda sounds like the mid-point between a baritone and a standard bass imo.
This right here is the EXACT reason that record sounds "off" to me. I don't have too much of an issue with most of the production choices on that record, but the softening of Abe's drums (for lack of a better term) is unforgivable.
I don't even know what he's doing, but the little descending run/slide thing he does at the end of Ceremony is so fucking sick.
