I want OG lo-fi Team Sleep sound, pre the actual album. That stuff is the closest Chino's come to making a masterpiece outside Deftones, I think.

This new Crosses song has been circling round my head since I woke up. The melody and the production are instant.

 

Yeah, that's ultimately what I want too. You have that Off the Record compilation?

It's a real shame what they did to Natalie Portman when it became Live From the Stage on the album.

I checked the description of that video because I knew it was louder than the other YouTube upload of the same material. That user did indeed attempt a mastering job on it.

The original concept for TS was super lo-fi. I like the album but it sometimes veers into being Deftones-lite. Whereas the very early original demos were all recorded on a 4-track I think. Teenager on White Pony was originally a Team Sleep song. And even the video that LightWithoutHeat just posted, which was the first draft of what was meant to be the album, has a really raw and unpolished feel. That was the idea. Death By Plane is one of my favourite Chino tracks across any project and one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. That song into Appollonia, into that specific recording of Iceache, is wild. The Mike Patton track on there is great too.

I think I'm right in saying that at the time, Chino's label deal with Deftones stated that any side project of his had to be released through the same label and unfortunately the label head didn't like it. So when they eventually made it years later, a lot of the best songs got dropped and some of the songs that did end up on the album were produced and evolved in a different way.

Yeah Natalie Portman is one of the most gorgeous things Chino has done, it absolutely did not need what they did with it for LFTS

 

This new crosses song is really good. Do they do live shows?

 

They were doing them when their first EPs and album came out but they haven't since then. I guess it's something they fit around releases when Chino's not doing Deftones stuff.

 

Btw, the other song on the Vivien vinyl single, Day One, is 'out there'. I think laid-back might be the best description.
