also this, which I didn’t even know existed until Stephen did his playthrough of it a little while back
Story I feel like sharing. I got into Deftones when they released White Pony, and I remember really digging what I perceived as the dichotomy between Back To School and Pink Maggit, and thinking it was neat how the latter was like an artier reprise of the former. And then down the road, I learned about how Pink Maggit came first, why Back To School was even written, and how Chino regrets making it. And I totally get it, but I still can't imagine listening to White Pony now without Back To School, so I'm glad he made it.
I really love this band I've only been a casual fan over the years, but the more I dig into their catalogue the more they are right up my alley, and I'm not generally a fan of metal or harder stuff Still have some digging to do but the one album that keeps reeling me back in is Diamond Eyes
The studio edition of Lhabia has an extra measure in the chorus that I finally noticed and it's so good. Chino delivers the extra "Look how it feels" line in such a cool way. I love that song even more now.
haven’t noticed that actually! will have to listen later. on another note with that song, I think it was like last year or so I finally noticed how Chino holds out “crook” underneath the “look at what it’s doing to you/look how it feels part” and now it’s one of my favorite things ever.
I heard it years ago but this live pre-WP version of Pink Maggit is pretty much the most beautiful thing ever.
I don't understand why they didn't just wait for me in Philly. I would have given them the response they were looking for
I once fell over going mad to Lotion on the dancefloor - at an afterparty in front of the whole of Korn and Incubus Good times
That is not a Deftones album cover. And I don't mean that in a dumb factual kind of way, I mean I legit would never see that being a picture they would use for an album cover.
I assume the joke is it's trying to riff on Around the Fur/Saturday Night Wrist so I get it but yea lol. Props to the pic though I'd use that as an album cover
Alright, I'm gonna elaborate on my take a little bit, but I want people to understand this is not a commentary on whoever is in that picture, but just a feeling about the vibe and how I perceive Deftones. Deftones I feel always has a very almost sexual vibe going through their music and their work. Maybe that's even the wrong word to use, but I feel like whatever it is, it comes across in the things that they do, like the video for "You've Seen The Butcher". And anyway, I feel like that also translates in the artwork that they choose. There's a vibe that's going through it. I get that vibe from the artwork of Around The Fur and Saturday Night Wrist. I don't get that vibe from the picture above. On a different note, I just read that apparently Chino hated the artwork for Around The Fur, so maybe we'll never see artwork like that again ever.
lol I love it. When I got the album for Christmas in 1998 my mom slipped a piece of construction paper over it in the jewel case so my little brother wouldn't see it.
I have a shirt with the ATF cover art on it that I wear all the damn time and it’s faded to shit and I love it. I like the cover bc it feels menacing but it’s only bc of the perspective otherwise it’s just a normal ass photo. and it’s an interesting marriage of ugly and beautiful (the subject is conventionally attractive, but the angle is incredibly unflattering) which is like the whole essence of their sound.
