Ahhh, the delivery of the chorus (especially "I believe your love...") is what makes it so good for me! But I guess we're splitting hairs about a great record regardless haha
I get that! I think I more so have mixed feelings about the tail end of the melody (“has placed its spell on me” etc). I like the effect on the vocals and how they’re mixed in the first part of the hook, but I find the two sections kinda sound jarring to me as a call and response to each other probably mostly due to the disparity in the mixing. and yeah def splitting hairs bc the record is top 3 of their discog for me regardless and something like the outro of TSOM is a perfect encapsulation of everything I love about the record.
Sometimes I think I don't really like Gore, then I throw it on and am proven completely wrong. I mean my god, Acid Hologram alone is just magical.
Gore is tight. I'm not as into it as I was back when it came out, but it's still a good album with a ton of cool ideas and riffs. Phantom Bride is still one of my favorite Deftones songs to date.
Don't know that I've gone back to Gore since Ohms came out, but yeah there's some absolute gems on there. It only really falters in the mid section of the album, and even then it's not outright bad.
I’ve come around on Gore a lot since its release, but it’s still bottom 3 in their discography for me. it’s probably my favorite of those 3 tho.
Crest was the original opener on Gore. I think they decided it didn't fit the pacing of the record or something just before they handed in the album. Mixlr is a broadcasting app that Chino goes on sometimes and plays music that he likes.
can’t even find evidence he played it from googling so yeah that must have flown way under the radar, lucky af ha
ATF is good and has some absolutely disgusting riffs, but I guess it doesn’t resonate as much with me since I didn’t start listening to Deftones until 2010/2011, which might have something to do with DE being a top two or three album from them for me With that said, S/T is fucking sick. I was just listening to it this morning actually. Hexagram, Minerva, Battle-Axe, and Bloody Cape are some of my absolute favorite songs from Deftones and in general
I actually got into them around the same time ha, I think 2009 was when I dipped my toes in the waters with them but I was a full-fledged fan by the time DE came out and that was my first new album cycle as a fan. I was more into it at the time but as the newness wore off from it it’s just kinda slid lower and lower in my ranks over time and with each new record. it’s a really good record and I get why it’s held in such high esteem for some, but it’s a sunnier and almost hyper-melodic (for them) record and I tend to gravitate to Deftones for different reasons— I tend to like ‘em more when they’re darker and moodier. ATF actually rose in my ranks a ton over time, I’ve always loved it to some degree but it wasn’t until like a little over 2 years ago when it really hit me in a whole new way. I think you can just tell the band was really clicking together in a very special way at the time, like they’re all really giving it all they’ve got performance-wise and the flow of the songs structurally and sequentially is just so natural. also production-wise I think it’s my favorite, the drum sounds are my absolute favorite ever on it for sure.
def one of the best on the record. excellent closer, tho they tend to close their records out very well imo so that’s kinda par for the course. I am also very big on Doomed User, some of the coolest guitar work Steph has done imo.
