You can find it right now on YouTube, believe it or not. This is so surreal. I never figured this moment would actually ever happen. I’ve been wondering what they’d do with the guitar riff from Trempest for the past 18 years when it first appeared in a studio teaser video.

I was listening to it on YouTube during my lunch but it got taken down before I could finish it LOL. Only track I haven’t heard is Diamond.

If anyone wants to help me out…

Well now I’ve listened to the whole thing lol.

That was a surreal listen. After knowing about the lore around this album ever since becoming a fan, it’s crazy that it’s here.

With some polishing on most of the songs, this definitely would’ve been a cool/interesting entry in their discography. Destiny is a beautiful song. Candy might be my favorite. Although it’s kind of obvious it didn’t finish the mixing finish line.

I do wonder why Chino chose Smile to be finished/released years back. Obviously it was done as a tribute to Chi, but I wonder why he chose that one specifically.

supposedly it was the closest to being finished, iirc. there are subtle mastering differences in the version that dropped today and the one he momentarily posted on YouTube over a decade ago (maybe the vocals are a bit too loud on the new leak, but it's better quality that a YouTube rip of the "final version"). it definitely feels more like single material, so i can definitely see why he went with that.

I don't think any of these really could have been singles apart from Smile, maybe Destiny and maybe Melanie

kind of amused at where the vocals in Diamond drop out bc that's exactly where I wouldn't have had any idea what to write either lol

Dare Deftones and My Chem to tour together and call it the We Won't Talk About It Tour.

anyone get their hands on the Ohms or Gore B-side leaks?

  14. I think the Gore one was a cell phone recording. Pretty tough to make out what was going on.

and apparently it's not even the full song - just the same section looped a couple times. still sounded pretty cool.

one of the sites where new material was popping up got a request from the band's management to shut down the thread where files were being shared, lest they face legal consequences. so in addition to the YouTube copy being pulled down, the band is definitely aware that it's out there. although like the MCR leaks, i don't expect them to make a statement about it beyond issuing takedowns.

def not a great quality rip but ngl I could still tell I like it more than a lot of what ended up on the record personally lol. cool to hear it in any form.

Totally agree. Most of the time I was listening to the album I was thinking about what would’ve happened if it was released instead of Diamond Eyes and how it would’ve been received and how it would’ve impacted them. Definitely one of those fascinating “what ifs”

I always thought of Diamond Eyes as the album that helped kickstart the band again in terms of popularity and it makes me wonder if this album would’ve had the same affect

I think the zoomer kids that love Deftones now would’ve really latched onto a lot of Eros if it had come out but the band would be in a massively different career space without Diamond Eyes. I kinda doubt Eros would’ve moved the needle at the time like Diamond Eyes did.

Only been able to skim this so far, but it immediately felt like an elevation and progression of the SNW aesthetic and very different from DE. I really enjoyed DE, but this probably had an even higher ceiling for me personally, depending on final touches and production.

But I agree that, knowing that in reality DE drove renewed sales/success for them, this material dropping in 2009-10 instead of DE most likely would've been "worse" for their career long-term.

the screams in Electra??? oh my god????

One thing that the album really solidifies with me is why I love this band. Even though they’ve honed in on their distinct, signature sound, each album still manages to have its own sound/vibe/identity. Even Eros really has its own feel*. I just can’t describe it.

Deftones are what I call a “snowflake band.” Each album is the same thing, but no two albums sound alike.

*The only exception to me being Sable. That one feels like it easily could’ve been a SNW song.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

damn was so excited to finally hear Crest, I hope that eventually finds its way out in some shape or form resembling finished

I can’t get past Trempest. That’s the primal, ominous Deftones of old I just can’t get enough of. They’ve tried to hold onto that vibe a little, but nothing hits as hard as these older pieces.
