This is very good, I don’t think it’s as immediate as Ohms for me (came out at a time when I was listening to music all day long) but I also haven’t gotten too many chances to listen in full yet. Hoping to let it sink in a bit more this week.

 

Around the Fur was lightning in a bottle. Written and recorded quickly, each song makes a unique statement, and Chino's voice was in its prime. No trappings of rampant success to stagnate the writing process and no expectations. It's also my favorite sounding record, maybe ever. I really don't think anything will top it for me.

also, might have my favorite flow/sequencing of any of their records, but it also doesn’t feel super labored over in that regard. actually feels quite effortless, more like a live set.

 

ATF is still Chino's favorite record of theirs too

 

Decided to start a discog run today. I honestly don't remember how long it's been since I've listened to Adrenaline, and it's a wild album.

 

Always chuckle when I remember that Chino did a guest feature on a Whitechapel album

 

Alright, Adrenaline was a banger. Our man was doing pig squeals and gutturals on this thing IN 1995!

 

Yea Around the Fur is tough to beat as my favorite album of theirs, it's really something special. I mean pretty much every album from them is, but AtF is just...I dunno, there's something that just tickles me extra with it

 

If Adrenaline had the production value of Around the Fur, it would be one of my favorite albums

 

These songs are constantly rotating in my head. Been a while since I’ve said that for a new album.

anyone still waiting for their copy to ship? i reached out to customer service and was assured on Thursday that mine was still processing, but it's been several days later and still no movement. i figured it'd at least ship on Friday or today (since i'm sure they don't dispatch new shipments over the weekend), but nothing yet

 

Better and better every listen. Cant believe how good Chino still sounds for 52. Songs have been stuck in my head all day.

 

He’s also on a Dance Gavin Dance and Polyphia song. Dude is all over the place.

Gave this a few more listens and I’m loving it more and more with each listen. Now that’s it’s sunk in, a few useless thoughts:

-Crazy to think that 30 years after their first album, they’re still experimenting and pulling out new things. Chinos vocals were pretty refreshing this album and it was interesting hearing him change up his style (Locked Club and the last three tracks all come to mind)

-Infinite Source is still my fave and I’m happy that the general consensus here is that the song rocks. I genuinely think it’s a top 5 Deftones song for me. I’m not even joking. it really reminds me of Ohms (the song), but more organic-feeling

-I was hoping that Fred would really shine on the album and I’m kinda bummed it wasn’t really the case. I hope they give me some more room/spotlight next album

-Metal Dreams is another great standout to me. The way the chorus just bursts in hits like a bag of bricks. Weirdly kinda reminds me of Tempest too?

-I’m usually not picky when it comes to this kind of stuff, but the mixing/production on this album was a lot better than Ohms. As great as I think Ohms is, the guitars sound weird as hell on that one. Stef’s tone on this one sounded way less muddier and more natural

But yeah. This is a great add to their discography. Deftones is one of those bands (to me) that consistently churns out great albums, so I wouldn’t necessarily call it “their best work in years,” but damn this is a great album. I’ll be jamming this one for a while

 

Yea he has multiple on The Anti Mother, Surrender Your Sons is so good

 

Actually Cove from Saosin is right with him on that album too, kinda wild

 

Anti Mother is such an underrated album, that thing goes crazy

 

Yeah he didn't just guest on those songs, he helped Norma Jean wrote them iirc. Imagine being able to say Chino Moreno co-wrote and recorded a couple songs, just normal band stuff.

 

15 years later and I'm still craving the Bad Rabbits x Chino collab that never saw the light of day

 

Or the Incubus one from 2017 with Skrillex at the helm (!?), not sure what happened to that one either
