Amusingly read an article today from years ago where Laura Jane Grace listened to White Pony for the first time and they had her listen to "Back To School" last and she made this remark: "At the same time, having a song from the beginning and the end suggests some kind of story arc which is cool." And I'm like, exactly, Laura. NOTE: They also acknowledged the request for the song in general was lame of the label. Which yes, it was. But still.
Yeah, nostalgia is a hell of a drug, but Back To School was on the version of the CD I had, and as much as I love Feiticeira (I still have trouble spelling this) it feels like a perfect track 2 to me because that’s how I listened to it during my formative years. I also like the full circle of Pink Maggit having the same hook/chorus. Comparing Deftones openers is crazy because they are all insane. I wanna show love for Genesis since it hasn’t been mentioned, that song is an absolute behemoth. I think the weakest opener is… Prayers/Triangles I guess? But it’s still one of my favorites on that album.
I like Back to School and I think my biggest problem with its inclusion, controversially is that it bumps everything else down one spot which just fucks with the vibe. Digital Bath is like the most perfect Track 2 in the history of the medium
That’s my take on it too. It’s a fun song and very reflective of the era, but it’s just a weird fit on White Pony Feiticeira is kind of a weird opener for me though. But I also couldn’t think of a different opener to replace it
So I finally took the time to listen to the new album and I love it, the most immediate a Deftones album has been for me in forever. The song that really sticks with me the most right now is "Souvenir", which is "Cherry Waves" as fuck.
Hexagram remains my favorite opener. It's the first Deftones song I've ever heard as well, and what an entrance. The MV popped up on TV one night and I'll never forget how it made me feel, I had never heard anything like it. The odd chord progressions combined with the chainsaw like guitar tone, the weird shouted vocals and those otherworldly long screams made for a spine-chilling listen.
Didn't have much of a chance to spin this yesterday as planned but will report back, thank you everyone for your suggestions.
Just listened, it’s solid. Clears both of the last two records, not as good as anything from Around the Fur to Koi No Yokan. The stretch of “I Think About You All The Time”, “Milk of the Madonna” and “Cut Hands” is good.
I think it's better than a few of the albums from that run maybe including Around the Fur, which it feels neck and neck with in my ranking right now
Infinite Source is incredible and does so many new things they haven't done before. Just goes to show they still create such cool stuff.
Around the Fur not being in a person’s top 3 at minimum invalidates their opinion for me, sorry!!! kidding, but only kind of
This is very good, I don’t think it’s as immediate as Ohms for me (came out at a time when I was listening to music all day long) but I also haven’t gotten too many chances to listen in full yet. Hoping to let it sink in a bit more this week.
Around the Fur was lightning in a bottle. Written and recorded quickly, each song makes a unique statement, and Chino's voice was in its prime. No trappings of rampant success to stagnate the writing process and no expectations. It's also my favorite sounding record, maybe ever. I really don't think anything will top it for me.
