I got a pre-shipment notification for something the other day in my Shop app, idk what it’s for but I have a suspicion it’s my pre-order of this as I can’t think of anything else at the moment it could be.
Company that seems to be organising the listening events btw: Pitchblack Playback | immersive album listening sessions in the dark Sounds really interesting actually. They run a lot of classic album listening events too. Sounds as close to distractionless as possible
I’ve been thinking about something that gives me a question for you all. Deftones seem to me like a band that had major aspects of their sound figured out really early. It’s amazing how consistent, confident, and unique they’ve been since the beginning. I can throw on almost any Deftones song and not only am I satisfied, but I also quickly know who I’m listening to. This led to me getting a lot of their song titles mixed up as a kid with 6 albums to parse through, and also had me feeling like basically every album was equal in quality. So I’m curious: How would you describe each of the Deftones albums with a sentence? What is it that makes each one feel different to you?
I'd have to think hard about what particular sentences would describe each album for me, but differentiating them comes down to a perceived "mood" that I associate with each album. Things like production, the different tunings, and play style play a part too, but each album impresses a unique feeling on me. I don't know if that makes sense but that how I think about it.
One that's easier to pin down is S/T, which carries a weight to it that I feel more than any other album.
I think Frank does a lot of heavy lifting in this area too, he’s playing a role that traditionally a producer would when it comes to adding layers of atmosphere to add intrigue to the music. he does a pretty good job of switching up his sonic palette to suit the mood of each record.
First shot, go with my gut adrenaline - raw Around the fur - aggressive White pony - masterpiece Self titled - coasting Saturday night wrist - burned-out Diamond eyes - renewal Koi no Yokan - atmospheric Gore - experimental Ohms - rediscovery one word was hard edit: just saw that I could use a sentence, but screw it, one word descriptions
Sounds like at least one store is selling the album early for some reason. Might be out there sooner than later.
lol, I like a lot of Self Titled and SNW, but I go back to those and Adrenaline less than anything else for full album listens. If I took the best of those two and made one album it’d be peak though. All of Deftones is good!
The album art differentiates a lot of the albums for me. As obvious or stupid as that may sound, I definitely think of cool silvers and greys when I hear White Pony, extreme dark when I listen to self-titled, bright daytime colors in Gore, etc.
Adrenaline: Primal. Around the Fur: Erotic. White Pony: Overwhelmed. Self-Titled: Defeated. SNW: Lost. Diamond Eyes: Reborn. Koi No Yokan: Ascended. Gore: Uncertain. Ohms: Determined. Private Music: Urgent. Edit: Updated with PM!
Adrenaline: scuzzy bopping metallic Bad Brains worship, with its beauty poking out the cracks. Around The Fur: visceral heavy hooky swagger — confident angry White Pony: cocaine high Self-titled: cocaine low SNW: I don't know what drugs to take anymore; a little bit of everything Diamond Eyes: I'm in love and excited again Koi No Yokan: I'm in love and we're on a road trip Gore: Midfield haze, floating, sometimes aimlessly Ohms: Crunching everything together real close to the speakers
