Incredible single. All the comments from the early listeners were feeding my excitement, and the band killed it on this one. So many older styles blended and sounding fresh here. Those drums, guitar riffs, and synth are wild. It's catchy AF and makes me want the new album right now. It's hard to not listen to this on repeat all day, as I have a NIN show tonight and I'm going through the set list for that while I work.
2/2. Honestly reminds me of something off Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness in the best way possible. Billy Corgan just needs to have Chino as a guest on his podcast and accuse him of still smashing pumpkins riffs.
I don’t feel like we have gotten a song quite like this from them since the Chi days. it does have a lot of modern Deftones in its DNA of course, but when was the last time we’ve had this kind of guitar work from them? feels akin to Mein, which is the obvious and most apt comparison I have seen from folks here, but it’s also not far off from, like, Knife Party, or BQAD, or even Good Morning Beautiful in that regard. it’s funny, to me it’s a sound that feels definitively Deftones, but looking across their discography there’s really just a select few tracks that bring this kind of vibe and they’re always album highlights to me, and I feel like we just haven’t had them since Diamond Eyes. idk! I can also hear the Swerve City comparison in the bouncy rhythm of the drums a little too but outside of that I think it’s fairly different. anyway, I have been thirsting for a song like this from them again for what feels like forever, and this track doesn’t disappoint at all. I already loved MMIAM, but I think this beats it, and if the rest of the album is of comparable quality to these two songs I think we’re in for their best record of the post-Chi era.
