my downloading leaks days are behind me, which I'm happy about because now I'm a more patient music listener. so because of that I'm trying to be a good boy and wait for the official release. but all these rave reviews are making it difficult haha. y'all enjoy tho
Between these lyrics and the latest Crosses album it seems like Chino is leaning heavily into the spiritual side of things and I'm here for it.
Okay I just listened to it and WOW. That rocks. It definitely sounds like a SNW cut. My excitement for this is growing by the day
I didn't really get into this all that much until around the midway point but by then I was all in great track
He was definitely making spiritual and biblical allusions on Ohms and recent Crosses work but these are much more direct references. Holy ghost, I'm on fire Holy spirit, I'm on fire -------- Blows a wind, it fills and quakes the houses from above -------- A display, tongues of fire against the night And also: Wide awake, burning out the foxes from the vines
i feel like i dig the new song musically a lot more than i dig it vocally, not that i think chino sounds bad just that hes mixed really low and his part isnt terribly interesting. still a cool track tho
iirc, they wanted Caroline Polachek to do guest vocals on Grace for the last Crosses album, but she passed because she said she didn't feel comfortable singing lyrics with religious connotations like that. it's interesting because i don't think Chino is religious in the slightest so he's just evoking religious imagery/language as a lyrical tool, but to the point where some people might actually mistake it as genuine religious dedication
See I think it's genuine spiritual searching; not that he's born-again Christian, but I got the sense on Ohms that there was some real spiritual wrestling. The run of Error, The Spell of Mathematics, and Pompeji seemed to be strongly contemplating ideas of some kind of spiritual freedom/release and then spiritual betrayal. On that Crosses album there's Grace, which you mentioned, and Chino said was straight-up about Jesus; and then two songs later, Natural Selection, which seemed to function in a similar way to Pompeji on Ohms (‘You relay godliness; God remains violent’). And the new bio on Spotify describes the new album as a meditation on 'the beauty and peril of nature, the challenge of cultivating a positive mindset and visions of a journey beyond the physical realm’. I don't know if it's genuine dedication but I think it's more than a simple lyrical tool. And I'm interested to see how much it shows up on the rest of the album.
got it. not upset if it truly is a search for spiritual meaning (that's kind of what i study for a living, albeit on a macroscopic scale). have they collaborated before? i can't remember
Yeah he's on a remix of one of her songs. Hang on, I'll find that interview. Edit: https://www.stereogum.com/2238512/c...team-sleep/interviews/weve-got-a-file-on-you/
if that Deftones/Denzel Curry/Drug Church lineup was hitting North America I'd have to rethink my stance on never going to big shows. whew. (SOaD, great as they are, seems like a depressing spectacle so many years out from new material, and Polyphia are not my thing at all.)
