This is the first Deftones song I’ve ever listened to, and only because I saw it compared to HUM on reddit, but it rips. Is there anything else in their back catalog that sounds like this?
Go back and listen to Koi no Yokan and/or their 2003 self-titled immediately, this song sounds closest to either of those albums.
Swerve City off the album Koi No Yokan comes to mind. I think that album and Ohms have the most songs with this kind of feel. It’s a great song, but it’s not wholly unique, so if you like this one you’ll probably dig a ton of their discog.
Saving the new song and the Zane Lowe interview for my end-of-the-work-week treat, but damn y'all's first impressions have me hyped!
listen to Knife Prty from the album White Pony. It’s basically Little Dipper worship. Then listen to that whole album. The version that doesn’t have Back to School.
I agree. I do like it a lot, but it wasn’t part of the original vision for that album and it does feel out of place.
An alternative/metal music webzine running a Worst Songs list in the Summer of 2008 and placing "Back To School" high is how I finally got into the band after being familiar with them for years lol. So that was my jam in my early days as a fan at the time. I practically never reach for that song these days but I don't mind it.
Yeah the CD I was given as a kid opened with Back to School. I've listened to it starting with Feiticeira and it just feels off for me personally.
It's funny to see everyone's comparisons to other Deftones songs/albums because to me, this sounds closest to a mix of "Genesis" and "Doomed User" lol really hitting with headphones. Might grab that pink variant from Urban Outfitters, I prefer the green cover and the pink paired with it feels like Modest Mouse's Good News for People Who Love Bad News.
I thought it felt more Gore than most would probably want to admit. Honestly, like you said, a mix of the last two albums in a really good way works as a comparison for me. I don't know if I hear self titled the way others do, but it's been a minute since I've listened to it. Put on Ohms this morning after listening to the new single a few times. I really love how consistent it is. Every song is great, but Headless stuck out to me this time around. That guitar tone in the bridge is punishing in the perfect way, one of their catchier songs IMO.
I’ve been listening to Self-Titled a lot this week and I also hear more Ohms and Gore (a good thing!) on this song.
