I honestly thought that Loathe album was a straight up Deftones ripoff but that’s why I really liked it.
Two Way Mirror and a couple others for sure, but it still had a lot of that metallic hardcore/metalcore sound across the whole album too much to be a direct ripoff, but I want them to lean further into that Deftones-esque sound.
There are a couple songs or sections that sound straight out of Deftones’ discography, but that’s to be expected from a band who is heavily influenced by them. I think there are still plenty of songs and sections that are more unique to Loathe or are inspired by other bands than they are to Deftones
I'd rather Loathe don't continue to lean into Deftones worship. Two Way Mirror's a great song but it crosses the border into a great song because it has a deceptively big chorus, not because of the Deftones-isms. And there are two or three other really good songs on that record but the rest of it lost its taste for me after three listens, and I think it's far from the masterpiece that metalcore subreddits do. Dimorphous Display, on the other hand, was a pretty promising experimentation and I hope they haven't let a relatively mixed response stymie them. It's funny how even they don't actually feel like Deftones either. All of those bands do an approximation of a Stef riff, with a washed-over breathy vocal, doused in melancholy, and think that's it. I'm sure it's partly why there's this misrepresentation of Deftones as a sad band now; they all miss the swagger, the beats, the tension and release, and all the rich, popping nuances in Chino's voice, which you can't replicate just by throwing some washy delay over.
Limousine is Diamond Eyes without as good a riff, groove, melody, or production. This recent single from Boston Manor is actually sweetly imbued with a feel-good, summery chorus
i've heard tons of people call Limousine a cheap ripoff of SYNC.wav by Moodring, lmao (for the record, i love both songs)
Really enjoyed this! Not familiar w/Boston Manor at all, is this pretty indicative of their normal sound?
I'm not that familiar with them myself but I understand that's more Deftones-tinged than their usual stuff. Their new album's out at the start of September.
The album or the song? Cause honestly, "Diamond Eyes" is actually maybe one of my lesser favorites from that album. Feels too repetitive versus something like "CMND/CTRL" or "Rocket Skates".
The song. Probably one of my lesser favourites from that album too, but the ‘big’ refrain on Limousine is just the Diamond Eyes verse without even half the feel. I think pretty much all music is collage to some extent, but I can't get past that one.
my partner has been compiling a playlist of Deftones-adjacent songs/bands. drop some recommendations beyond the ones discussed so far.
Vexes. Their double album Imagine What We Could Destroy /// If Only Given Time is incredible and really scratches the itch. Super underrated.
