Yeah rings a bell that Stef wrote entombed. The chino/stef narrative is so lazy, and to make a broader point this idea that good art necessitates conflict and dysfunction is really harmful and I wish journalists would stop using it as a trope.
Acid Hologram, Doomed User, Hearts/Wires, Gore, Phantom Bride, and Rubicon are all great songs. Gore just gets a little lackluster in the middle, but it has some truly amazing songs.
Not sure if this has been posted already but it's a great read: How Terry Date Captured The Magic Of Deftones On Ohms — Kerrang!
The update no one is asking for: I’ve basically listened to nothing but Deftones since this album released, and have gotten through ‘Saturday Night Wrist’ (I’m trying to not just plow through everything, but instead am trying to take a few days to actually process things. It’s hard). Everything is great. I think I want to say that Saturday Night Wrist might be my favorite so far, because it feels like it’s the weirdest/most diverse, and the combination of Xerces and Rats!Rats!Rats! is just incredible. It feels like ‘the best’ so far. But honestly, I just keep listening to Around the Fur over and over so that’s actually probably the real answer to what I like most. It’s weird falling in love with a band 25 years after they started making music. But it’s also incredibly fun.
That was me a few months ago. My new bandmates are big fans and prior to a few months ago all I’d heard was ATF, WP, and DE. I need to devote more time to S/T and SNW but right now KNY is easily my favorite for it’s soaring almost stadium rock sounds.
Took this on a run finally. Urantia, and Error hit a lot harder when you’re gasping for air like me when I run.
Yeah this album is really falling into place for me, the most consistent thing they've put out in years. Not a weak track on it. Still early days for me in terms of ranking, need to live with it a bit longer, but right now it's a really solid mid-tier deftones album. Error and Spell of Mathematics are current favourites, but its all great.
I absolutely love everything about this record. Is it my current choice as AotY? Yes. Might it also be my favorite Deftones release? Quite possibly.
Deftones on lost album 'Eros': "It would be interesting to finish at some point, and I've never said we wont'
While I recognize this is the holy grail of Deftones albums I almost don't want them to at this point. It's been 12 years and I have to imagine revisiting that stuff would be painful at the very least. If anything they should just release what was finished so people stop asking them about it. I think I've seen Chino answer this question a dozen times already.
I agree, I think it'd be cool if they just released what was finished as an EP, or if they each picked one or two tracks and went back to finish those.
fine with them doing it however they please. would be cool if they finished it, but would be cool if they left the tracks as-is and just released them without concern for them being perfect. would be cooler if they just did/released both
For me the main part of the Eros mythology is that it was the follow up to SNW, a hugely special album to me. I would want the deftones of that era to finish it rather than the deftones of the 2020s, however good they still are.
Holy shit, Diamond Eyes. You guys have all heard that album, right? It was just me that missed it? It feels like someone should have texted me or something. This record is crazy pants good. It’s such a trip that this band has been a thing for 25 years, I’m in the age group to have always known them, I like heavy music, and I’m just now listening to these albums. It’s hard to believe I just missed them so obliviously this whole time.
I want it bc it’s a missing link, and because I miss Chi (love Serg tho) and would really love and prob feel some type of release in hearing his final work with the band, particularly given that some of the stuff on SNW was his best stuff (Cherry Waves particularly). I wouldn’t want them to change it instrumentally in any significant way tho, but I think it’s mostly stuff on Chino’s end that needs worked on? maybe I’m wrong there. I’m more hopeful than ever tho it will see the light of day so that’s dope.
I've heard from them a few times that it "halfway" done. From other interviews about their album process I believe that it doesn't necessarily mean half the songs are finished, just that they were at a halfway point in the process. Take from that what you will but I have a feeling if more songs were "finished" like Smile we might have heard something more by now. Even that song may not have been the same had the record been completed.
I guess my ultimate stance really is just however they see fit to release it I am game. if they did change Smile from what it was originally, I think it’s a pretty incredible song so that doesn’t really effect my feelings on it one way or another
