the band themselves said they were all fully engaged this time around and that energy is palpable to most people who listen, it’s insulting to say an album that clearly had as much time and energy put into it as this one did is uninspired. honestly maybe it’s just a personal gripe of mine, I hate criticisms like that because imo that’s something that requires backing up, like what does sounding uninspired even mean? it certainly doesn’t mean songs that weave as much as these do and with as much attention to detail placed on atmosphere and textures and general production stuff. additionally, they apparently recorded most or all of this album live as a band without a click and that requires maximum effort from all members involved to go well, especially with songs as intricate as these are at times.
I think it’s probably better than SNW but I have been listening to SNW for 10 years, know those songs inside out and have formed emotional connections with a lot of em.
this is tied for KNY as my second favorite right now. but you know how the honeymoon period is. not that it matters because my ranking of this bands albums is never static because they're all amazing and theyy deserve to be up toward the top.
Yeah, I've only listened once so I don't want to go overboard but this is really fucking good. "Genesis" finally clicked with me, "Ceremony" kept me guessing in terms of what the rest of the record would sound like, but "Urantia" into "Error"...good lord. And "Ohms" is a perfect closer. Gonna have to let the rest sink in tomorrow, but I love it. Carried a lot of the major-key elements over from Gore and at times feels like a stronger, heavier, Terry Date produced SNW.
I feel like every song on the record, as I’m listening to it, I’m like “okay, surely, it can’t get any better than this right?” and then basically as quick as I asked that my ass was told to shit down and shut up and shown that, actually? yes, it can. Headless is probably my favorite here now on third listen. the melody in the chorus is otherworldly. it’s immediately one of my favorites Chino has written. it’s especially refreshing since this is an album less about flashy hooks and more about mood and atmosphere and alternately hitting you in the face with the fattest hardest riffs imaginable.
Just gave it my first listen through over breakfast. Gotta admit I wasn't blown away just yet - I loved both the singles immediately but didn't have the same experience with the rest of it, though there's definitely songs I'm excited to dig in to, Error and the stretch from Link to Headless sounded up my alley. I'll give it some proper attention with some headphones later on, I've no doubt its gonna grow on me.
Yeah let's... just not get close to passive aggressivity if someone doesn't shame a similar opinion as the majority. That's the kind of stuff that makes me only lurk certain threads on this site these days.
This album smokes Palms. Take note Thrice! Thrice should work with this producer. Deftones / thrice tour
Pink Cellphone by FAR my fav deftones song. Wish they had a full record in that style... alas i wait.
Hearing about Genesis being the possible weakest song (not that it means it's less than good, I'm aware!) hurts because I'm still as obsessed with it as an album track than as a single. Honestly, the only one that I'm trying to get into is Headless. I don't know if it's due to its position in the tracklist, but it's the only song that doesn't have a part that comes back into my head afterwards so far. I'll try giving it more listens on its own. Might be a grower like Risk or Graphic Nature were for me too.
