Reviews are saying this is a boring mess

I really hate to see the direction that Adam Wingard is going in after such a promising start.

Same with his ticks and mannerisms. Worked in the series, but when he was doing them in that clip it made me cringe really bad.

Yeah, I love The Guest and You're Next. Blair Witch was a disappointment, and this isn't looking like a big recovery. Hopefully he can do something with Godzilla vs. King Kong.

This suffered a lot from being a 90 minute movie and not a short, 8 episode series. There just was nowhere near enough time to develop things to the extent they needed to. I wouldn't call it bad, but there was a lot of squandered potential

That said, Dafoe was A+ as Ryuk

Idk really why they didn't make it a series

    that's the new format

    It's not awful tbh

It's a lot different and a lot less good than the anime. I found something to enjoy

But the fact that it's a very different story allows you to shut off expectations and take it for what it is. It took me about 15 or 20 minutes to come to that conclusion

There are casting issues especially Lights dad

    L was pretty great tbh

I do wish for one thing that Light and Ryuks characters were a lot more like the ones from the anime. Didn't really like what they did to them esp Ryuk

There were a few scenes where the acting REALLY took me out of it, I thought the pacing was way too fast and the story was not nearly as, i don't know, intelligent(?) as I wanted it to be. Light didn't really strike me as smart until the very end when he had that elaborate plot to save his life, and L made a lot of leaps in logic with very little to base it off of, or at least very little that was on screen.

About two thirds of the way through and all I've gotten from this, is this song stuck in my head.

I haven't watched it yet but can you tell me if they try t fit the whole thing into one movie or they they set it up for like a trilogy?

Short answer is yes, but it also is a completely different story.

So there was some good (?) in this, but overall, it was p bad.

    pros:
    -Dafoe as Ryuk is perfect
-Some of the direction and editing was pretty cool.
-The creepy atmospheres were pretty great, as few as there were

    cons:
    -Senselessly gory
-Horrible acting from L and Light
    -Bad dialog
-probably should have been 5-6 hours long
-Managed to feel more like an anime than the actual manga/anime
-L's solving of things was fucking illogical
-Every character in this felt incredibly dumb in comparison to their manga counterparts
-Light being so willy nilly about having the book from the get go isn't compelling
-the ending? what the fuck even?

Yeah this was just insanely rushed. I enjoyed it as a Wingard fan, but knowing what Death Note is/was, it left a lot to be desired. Still, I can think of worse ways to kill an hour and a half. I had fun with it.

It tells a four/five hour story in 90 minutes.
