It’s like they were designed for it, mixed with vinyl in mind Chris Walla’s insistence on analog DIY recording with no artificial assistance whatsoever, and his ability to produce songs into lush soundscapes using very simple melodies and like 300 different guitar tones… that was the soul of DCFC. For me they haven’t been the same at ALL since he left. He’s the primary reason Death Cab inspires me heavily as a guitarist and songwriter
my wife lost her mind seeing that because when I looked at her old iPod it almost made me puke with all the different artists names like that
a little surprising how on the nose these were. I’m watching being like how does Ben not own spiderland?
Death Cab For Cutie - The Photo Album @Kistler and I are going through the discography on our podcast, and our Photo Album episode is out today. Most of these early albums were first listens for me, so it's been really fun to discover a whole era of the band I had overlooked.
Thanks for sharing that. Was a fun listen and made me go back and listen to the album again. Also, sidenote, I didn't expect the podcast to sound so polished. Mind if I ask what your recording set up is like to get it so clean?
Thanks for listening! It’s nothing too fancy. SM7 into a Warm Audio 73 in a decently well treated home studio for my end. Gate/comp/EQ to touch it up afterwards - I found what worked in our first handful of episodes and haven’t touched the template since then.
