that fucking high note on the verses of "you can do better than me" my GOD. this album is the beatles, the beach boys, elliott smith and yet nobody but death cab for cutie.
fuck it im live-posting the drums on Grapevine Fires are so subtle yet entrancing, some very impressive and quiet snarework. DCFC lowkey has had some of the best drumming of the past 15 years. (the same could be said for "possess your heart." he really plays with his snare placement, lot of paradiddles and flams and stuff, always keeps things feeling very lilty and welcoming, but like you never QUITE know where the groove is.)
Narrow Stairs has my favorite DCFC tones. Those open, warm, natural drums make me gooey on the inside.
narrow stairs is highly underrated. tbh i think most of their post-plans material is either under-appreciated or wrongfully maligned. as in, codes and keys is a good record
also, taking a kid to a cemetary, lol damn Ben, coldblooded but your voice can literally sing anything so i guess it's okay
Jason McGerr is maybe my favorite working drummer today. I highly recommend searching him on youtube, lots of "Grapevine Fires" pattern breakdowns.
nick harmer, fucking counterpoint KING on "Twin Sized Bed." that chorus is only five notes or something but they all fucking count. calling it now, all songs about twin sized beds rock (this listen is officially v biased, but no care ever)
i've always loved how little he diverges from conventional grooves while sounding SO original and defined. "no room in frame" especially.
there's a quiet fury over this whole thing. obviously the lyrics are dark, but the pace of this record is insidious, and then after a while you realize just how feverish the whole thing has been on some level and you get kind of unnerved by it. agh, man, this one is just WORKING for me lol. right place, right time yall.
and then they carried on like long division as it was clear with every page that they were further away from a solution that would play without a remainder he had sworn not to be what he'd been before to be the remainder oh man. ohhhhhh brb weeping
believe it or not, the second i finished this up, i realized i'd actually heard every DC album but this one going in, which is weird haha
Kintsugi is great and has one of their best in "No Room in Frame." I enjoy Codes and Keys, probably my least favorite in the end, but still has some great songs imo.
I really enjoy both but come back to Codes and Keys the least. Unobstructed Views might be their most underrated song.
Codes and Keys is my least favorite DCFC record, but it still has some great tracks. I always find myself coming back to Doors Unlocked, Tourist and Stay Young.
