But yeah, they aren’t comparable, which is why ascribing any level of significance to year end lists other than “this person/this group of people like these albums” is kind of dumb!

    Ugh. Fine.

Don't worry, I am not actually offended that you like the Mitski album better than the Death Cab for Cutie album.

    I figured hahaha.

60 & Punk is probably a top five Death Cab song for me now tho!

Also worth noting that I have had way, WAY worse takes than this in the past!

  13. agreed but man I couldn’t get into the Mitski album at all either. Maybe if it weren’t hyped but it never elevated past BG music for me.

I would have said the same thing about Mitski back in August, but I gave it another shot the other day and I regret not trying again sooner. It's great

these things spiral out of control way too quickly haha.. Anyways.. I heard autumn love the other day and was reminded how great this is.

Idk I think it's fair to compare Mitski with this since they're both technically rock/indie rock. The Mitski record is so much more interesting to listen to, and a lot fresher, whereas this is more or less the same thing Death Cab's been doing for years.

Also, if you told me Pitchfork would have put a rock record as #1 (and a country record #2) on its year end list in 2018 I never would have believed it.

I think we can steer the conversation away from this topic now. I didn't mean to shit on anyone's favorites or anything, and if you like that Mitski record, then more power to you. I just think it's important to be able to discuss dissenting opinions and to not blanch at the idea that someone could prefer, say, a past-prime Death Cab for Cutie record to the closest thing this year has to a consensus critics' favorite.

    Autumn love
    Hurricane
    Northern lights
Punk and 60 are really great

The rest is okay to good but it’s a really solid record

    My favorites:

    I dreamt we spoke again
    Summer years
    Autumn love
    Northern lights
    Near/far
    60 & punk

That was more than I expected. I think it’s a relatively boring record lyrically but still makes for a fun listen and sits nicely in their discog, if a little too nicely.

Definitely a boring record lyrically, which has prevented me from getting too into it, but hearing it live really improved it for me. I like it more than Kintsugi and I’d probably say it’s on the level of Codes and Keys which I do enjoy. Summer Years is the best song on here.

Wow I think the lyrics are maybe my favorite aspect of this record. Maybe.
