Gut punch of a song. Between this and the new of Montreal I'll be doing some crying on Friday, don't text

This one feels the most modern Death Cab by the numbers but still enjoyable. Riptides remains my favorite of the three singles.

Narrow Stairs was the last record from these guys I really vibed with. But these songs have really connected. Especially punching the flowers and stone over water.

I’m definitely excited to listen to the whole record.

I really liked the last album, but have been avoiding the singles so I can go in blind on this

    Well, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy

Yeah I throughly enjoyed their last album. It was easily their best in years

  8. I like Thank You for Today more than Asphalt Meadows tbh.

Last album got me back into being a DCFC head after I faded off post-Plans.

and then the rest. I think there have been varying levels of quality since then, and a few albums are pretty solid, but that run of three albums feels like they were firing on full blast whereas the rest is just ranking the band after their peak

Asphalt Meadows was probably my least favourite of theirs since Something About Airplanes. I still enjoyed it a decent amount but I'm hoping I like this one more.

Transatlanticism is my favorite DCFC but it’s also an outlier to me. I don’t think they sounded like that before or after and I kinda view that one as a great one-off.

So, when I think of the DCFC I like best, excluding Trans as its own outlier, it is the more creative, weirder, less polished version of the band, and so the first records and Asphalt Meadows are what I think are DCFC at their ‘best’ for me.

Asphalt and these singles are more polished but they feel like they have more creative energy. The more normie rhythm-y I Will Possess Your Heart, Black Sun, You are a Tourist, Gold Rush etc sound is just not what I dig about DCFC, even though I really like a few of them.

A less wordy summary is that Asphalt Meadows felt like they were a great creative indie band again. The run from Plans to Thank You felt like major label DCFC spinning their wheels a bit even when there were great songs in there.

And that's why you always leave a note.

I gave Thank You For Today a relisten the other day. It really holds up. There's some stuff on there that sounds a lot like early Death Cab ("Summer Years" is an all-timer!) and I think people wrote it off too quickly. I used to rank Kintsugi above it but they may have flip flopped. Thank You seems to have aged better, to be honest.

Thank you for today and kintsugi are underrated and necessary transitional forms from 2000’s death cab into their modern era. Codes and keys sucks

while I do agree that codes and keys has some of the worst DCFC material, the highs of that album to me are higher than Kinsugi and TYFT. Even kintsugi has a ghost of Beverly drive on it which feels like essential death cab. Nothing about TYFT feels essential. The best of that album feels like death cab playlist fodder. Plus gold rush is their worst song.

60 & Punk, Northern Lights, I Dreamt We Spoke Again, Autumn Love, Your Hurricane and Summer Years all get consistent playback from me! I’m not putting them up there with Trans, Plans and Narrow Stairs but still good!
