Really loving this so far. Wanted to pop in and say the "mildew on his soul" line from Punching the Flowers just reminds me of You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch (complimentary), ha.
If you don’t like this record completely, it’s only because you’re in denial about your impending divorce.
I'm going to a listening party tonight and am curious to see what sort of turnout/response the record gets
When you hide who you are and try to pander to normies, you end up releasing something watered down like Make Believe. I’m keeping it real and weird.
I love ending the album on such a menacing note. It's obviously early but I can see this becoming my fav album of theirs since Narrow Stairs, which is funny because it has a lot of similarities to that album (which also happens to be my fav of theirs). What a great band
Said the above about Asphalt Meadows and off first listen impressions I prefer it but it's a close thing. They really fucking know how to open and close records huh
Initial single and opening track are the only things doing it for me. Rest of it sounds like b-sides. Rare miss.
Maybe I haven’t listened closely enough yet, but there wasn’t a lyrical moment I hated like “sugar in my coffee” from Asphalt, or an obnoxious vocal loop like Gold Rush. Big big fan. Loving it
I feel like the exact rhymes stuck out to me when on my first listen through headphones, but I'm not sure if that's something I'm going to be bothered by over time once the words/ideas really sink in.
Most interesting item for me from the interview is that Stone Over Water was a demo that the band left off their A and B list for potential songs to record with John Congleton. John asked to hear their entire set of 90 demos for himself and he pulled Stone Over Water out from the demo graveyard, much to the initial bewilderment of Mr. Gibbard and his band. Good eye, John C.
Just now at breakfast my daughter tapped her feet in her high chair to How Heavenly a State: "I like dis music! ...I'm dancing!"
Gold Rush might be the worst Death Cab song ever. I'm glad this new album is void of that kind of crap.
