To be fair, I'd argue Kintsugi is the only album where they don't try something new, and even in that case, it was their poppiest yet.
Caved and listened to the new single. Might be my favorite of the three. This is totally the kind of stuff I was hoping Death Cab would do after the Blue EP. This is the most stoked I’ve been for one of their albums in forever
I’d argue that they did a fair amount of new things on Kintsugi but it was diminished by Walla being increasingly uninterested in the band. I’m also a fan of the recent albums so don’t get me wrong. This, though, is seeming to be a welcome change of pace.
Love the newest single, but don't want to overplay it, nice to see EITS mentioned in the thread, as far as I remember their producer did a lot of work with EITS and it's great they're taking some bits from that musical landscape, seeing as he also has done stuff like Sharon Van Etten, Moses Sumney, it could go in lots of differen directions. Spoken word here is perfect as well.
I wonder if it was written as a spoken word track from the beginning. Is there a demo of it being sung?
The discussion here persuaded me to take another listen to see if there's something wrong with the spoken word, and I still actually really like it, it might be my favorite trick within that song to make the sparse melodies really shine for a moment there.
looking forward to what you think of it! all 3 singles have been great, and have me more excited for a new Death Cab album for the first time since Plans, ha.
More electronic elements, very as a piece with their last IMO. Not surprising: I'm a big fan. Going to listen a few more times, more impressions in the newsletter this weekend. Title track is awesome.
