I don't know what's "real" or "fake" or "kvlt" or whatever but New Bermuda really opened me up to the black metal sub-genre. I'm here for whatever's next.
i meant it as a joke. compared to sunbather, i didn't like the direction new bermuda headed especially on the second half of the album. brought to the water is one of the best songs they've ever written so there's still hope there.
I know. I've gotten fairly used to your sarcasm. Plus I kinda have an idea of your taste. I loved New Bermuda because it seemed more traditionally metal than Sunbather, kind of bridging that gap for me. I had listened to Sunbather and enjoyed some of it, but after hearing New Bermuda, I had a new appreciation for their older stuff.
try being married to me. my wife has a love/hate relationship with my sense of humor. it's been a while since i've listened to new bermuda so i'm giving a listen now, and it's refreshing my memory about what I didn't really like about it. the first two tracks were great. the riffing and vox on brought to the water and luna were near perfect. baby blue was a decent break from the barrage of the first two tracks, but it just meandered a bit too much for me before the end of the song. come back started out great, but the slower movement on the second half of the track went on for 2 or 3 minutes too long. gifts for the earth just didn't do anything for me at all and is probably my least favorite deafheaven song. overall, it's a solid album but it just isn't as good as sunbather, roads to judah, or even the demo to me. different strokes, etc. it probably also doesn't help that i've gotten into a lot of different black metal and blackened bands over the last few years that capture that are just better acts to me like mgla, uada, and dissection.
Yeah, like I said, NB was kind of my introduction into black metal, so it's probably the most mainstream shit there is. I need to dive deeper, but a lot of stuff I've heard goes on WAY too long and just kind of bores me. Probably just need to give it more of a chance.
new Bermuda is one of my favorite records, and one of those records where I don't know what direction I want them to go in after. maybe even more concise? longer and trippier? idk anything sounds good
I greatly prefer New Bermuda, which I think is weird bc if you described the sound of each album to me I would definitely think Sunbather would be more up my alley but it never really clicked.
compared to a lot of black metal, i'd actually say new bermuda is a pretty challenging listen because there's a lot going on sonically because they're including influences from a lot of other genres like post-rock, screamo, post-punk, and shoegaze. it just isn't for me. it's actually a decent primer into black metal because of it's accessibility, imo. if you're looking for more straightforward black metal releases, i can give you a few recs.
I like black metal just fine, but I need it supplemented with other genres to listen to it extensively. Nb did that perfectly.
I like New Bermuda as a whole much better than Sunbather, but Sunbather and Dream House are still the songs that make Deafheaven for me. we're ripping them pretty hard on our new record ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'd take some recs. I'm usually attracted to thrash/groove/hardcore/some death metal... Grind and some of the more abrasive stuff is harder for me to get into, but there are definitely exceptions. Like I said the more thrashy riffs and solos on NB are what helped me get on board originally. I'll give anything a try though really.
re: all the deafheaven praise - deafheaven's cool, but there are black metal records from the last few years that I like more. like the one's below i'm recommending for @suicidesaints: Mgla - "Exercises in Futility" (my favorite black metal album from the last few years. melodic but still heavy. itstays true to tradition BM sensibilities, IMO) UADA - "Devoid of Light" (probably my favorite new black metal band from the past few years. the american answer to mgla). White Death - "s/t" (they're a bit more acerbic than the first two recs, but this is probably my favorite black metal album of last year. melodic, traditional Finnish BM) Dodsrit - "s/t" (atmospheric black metal with a bit of crust thrown in for good measure) Vattnet Viskar - "2011-2015" (a comp of one of my favorite false black metal bands before they started to sound like circa survive) Astronoid - "Air" (Enslaved meets Coheed meets Deafheaven meets Circa Survive? definitely not black metal in the traditional sense, but there's some solid influence there. they've been described as "dream thrash" elsewhere) Air, by Astronoid
