You can tell they like the new material but also still love playing the old stuff as well. They had big smiles on their faces during the whole set. Even George broke character for a bit to laugh.
I feel like since they are leaning so much into the shoegaze they should hire a person to man the keyboards and let Shiv just rock out.
I’m really happy for this band. It’s well-documented that the darkest period of the band was during New Bermuda, but I remember reading in a story (I think on Pitchfork) leading up to Infinite Granite that the band was feeling pretty burnt out on the OCHL cycle. I had only seen them at the tail end of the New Bermuda cycle and a couple times during OCHL, but I cannot express enough how joyful they were on stage. They truly were having a blast.
I’ve been going to deafheaven shows for 8 years and they’ve become such an unstoppable force on stage
See I posted somewhere else about how there was a pit when they played the older songs and people thought I was crazy! "Moshing at a Deafheaven show?!" At my date, George was walking on heads and getting in the crowd and handing the mic out like it was some hardcore show. It was awesome!
Crowds definitely used to only really go hard for dream house but they were moshing to everything last night
My crowd had some dude in fingerless gloves shifting around like he was an idled character in a video game until Honeycomb kicked in and then he started moshing like he’d been practicing for that moment since March 2020
Also, shout out to Holy Fawn. I’ve seen them three times and every time is like a religious experience. (And I am an atheist) Also, Midwife opened my date and it was incredible as well.
i didnt enjoy midwife at all (only saw two songs) but that was my second time seeing holy fawn and they were astounding. their live show reminds me of way back in the early 2010's seeing bands like moving mountains and obrother opening for bigger bands but still holding their own and having that magnetic energy about them.
They model themselves after bands like Isis, etc but those are good RIYL They are pretty versatile in sound. The first time I saw them they opened for Covet and then for Thrice.
i just meant in how they play and present their live show, i know their music is a bit different (although they are signed to triple crown)
Definitely. I am assuming they played the new song at your date as well? The first part of it reminded me of some of the Triple Crown bands and then the back half was straight up Isis worship in the best way possible.
If work is still this slow by the time next Mon rolls around I seriously think I might. Have still never seen them live despite being a fan for a freaking decade now. They never came through KY when I used to live there and their last STL show was literally a week before I moved here
Best live show I've seen since Quarantine. Missed midwife unfortunately, but Holy Fawn and Deafheaven especially were something to behold
