i actually think it’s the “worst” his drumming has been, though that’s relative as he’s one of my favorite drummers
maybe not his top performance, idk, but it’s tough for me to compare it to what came before tbh, it is def the best their drums have sounded from a production standpoint tho imo
i agree with this. it’s definitely not his best from a performance standpoint but JMJ really made them pop in a way Shirley, who i like a lot, never really did
i find the subtle dynamics of the drumming so fucking gripping, it’s like listening to a smashing pumpkins record
It’s my favorite of his performances, blast beats are impressive but really repetitive. There’s way more to chew on here in terms of fills and grooves and patterns. And it pops more because blast beats take up so much space on the frequency spectrum they can’t be mixed in a way that really makes them pop without completely ruining other elements of the song
p much with you here, my fav drummer is probably Abe Cunningham and it is almost entirely a) bc of his sense of groove and b) bc I didn’t even realize just how good of a drummer he is until rather recently bc he serves the songs perfectly every time and doesn’t really try to outright steal the show.
Of everything that’s come out in august so far, this is what I keep returning to. I’m blown away by it. I love albums where I find new layers every single time I listen, especially when I listen on a variety of equipment.
I mean I wasn’t gonna bring it up but since someone did, that’s a perfect example of a review that I completely disagree with but feel like the author honestly engaged with the art and gave credit where credit was due and put some effort into their analysis
I totally missed my own review go up lol, that should tell you how busy I've been but spoiler alert: I think this is great. Infinite Granite
i disagree with the overall score but a lot of the points they brought up articulate how I feel about the album
so every time I listen to this album it’s been reminding me of something I couldn’t quite place, but I think I just finally figured it out
After Foxing I was gonna post something snarky about a potential similar situation with this pitchfork review. Though I still haven’t read the Foxing review, and from I’m gathering the author of this one engaged with it actually. Also I actually do enjoy for the most part Pitchfork reviews still.
