I think I’ve seriously been confusing this band with Deafheaven for awhile now. When Sinner came out and people were wowed with the pop direction, I’d assumed they were a harder borderline metal band, but digging into their discography with tracks like Everybody’s Dancing and Tuesday People, they’ve been pop rock all along so I’m not sure what the new direction is lol
I love Old Souls as well, first album I heard from them. I'm still singing Speeding Cars to my daughter almost every night when she goes to sleep. (We're Norwegian, so she doesn't understand the lyrics thankfully ;) From what I remember, the album didn't do good enough, and they ended up with a lot of debt, which then resulted in a lot of conflict within the band and leading to them pretty much breaking up.
I guess it's just this is a more standard and modern pop sound. A song like L.O.V.E. or Trigger off the last album was very rock based, but they have never been a metal band. Also their first album is very much a post-hardcore record.
If you take away some of the effects and "shine", at least 50% of this album could've easily fit on the last album in my opinion. (Sinner, Ritual, Holy, Saviour, Pure, Worship, Saint) Don't get why people are so mad.
It might not be the biggest change in sound ever, but it's the biggest change for this band since FAWL. I do think people are overreacting though. The sort of people that hear pop music and instantly assume it's bad.
I wasn't a huge fan of Old Souls. The songs were good but I never felt like going back to them. This is ok. Edit: lol never mind I got confused between Old Souls and All These Countless Nights. Old Souls is good.
Just checked out the bonus tracks. “Cr33pin” isn’t that special imo but solid, “Narcissus” on the other hand is a jam.
@beachdude I’m loving this album now! It’s been on big rotation all week (made me turn off the new TSSF off for a while). I’d say it has some of James’s most honest lyrics on this record. The chills on Epiphany are such a good way to end the album I think.
Narcissus absolutely should not be a bonus only track... it’s one of the songs I return to most from this.
Just listened to it...I dig! Yeah this album rules. I'd probably say Hell, Pure, Saviour, Worship and Epiphany are my favourites at the moment. How has the album done for them? Looking at the comments about it seems fans weren't keen on the new sound and I think that is blasphemy! I'll be gutted if this doesn't take off for them. Overall the album gives me similar vibes to All Time Lows new sound on their last record...a perfect blend of pop elements and rock in my opinion.
Kinda forgot about this album for a few weeks, so thanks for talking about it again and reminding me to put it on. And yeah - this album is pure joy. Really hope this does well for them, if not I'm afraid we won't be hearing any more DH music after this.
I think “Sinner” at least was getting some airplay in the UK, but idk about the rest. I’m also hoping it does well.
I haven't come back to this album a lot, I keep meaning to but it's got lost in the mountain of new albums that have been coming out that I'm interested in.
Yeah thinking about it I heard Sinner a lot when it came out here and Holy has got some airplay going. The album has been on heavy rotation still...dare I say it’s my favourite from them?
Fools & Worthless Liars and Old Souls are still incredible for me, idk if this tops those yet but it is very good.
Well they just released a brand new single called 'Narcissus'. It's pretty good actually. http://hyperurl.co/DeafHavana-Narcissus
