They've been on the decline for years so it's not surprising that WATO broke up. probably wise to break up now than end up playing shows to 50 people in a few years time. I loved Old Souls when it first came out, but I haven't properly listened to these guys in ages(the long wait between albums probably haven't helped). I listened to pre-released songs just now and was honestly a bit underwhelmed. I'll still check out the album in full though.
I actually think Old Souls is their best. Songs like Tuesday People, Saved, and Lights are so good for deep cuts.
This is finally out. Having a quick listen through now and it's pretty good so far. Will need time to let it settle though to see how it compares to F&WL and Old Souls. First thoughts are that L.O.V.E. and Happiness are absolutely incredible, and with it running into Fever I think it might be one the best three song runs they have ever done (Saved, Mildred, Tuesday People is my other choice).
First impressions are that the singles they've released (Trigger, Fever, St.Paul's, Sing, Cassiopeia) have the best melodies. But I'm sure I'll see things differently after a few more spins.
I think this is fanatastic lyrically. I don't dislike a single song on here! Ashes, Pensacola, Ghost, Trigger, Happiness and LOVE are early favourites. Yes lads! Can't wait to see them for the third time next month.
I've really enjoyed both shows that I've been to. Sound good and have a great stage presence. I think their banter is very British, so I'm wondering how that goes over in the States. Always a good time over here.
Omg don't say that, I love Young Guns so much even if they seem to struggle with their identity soundwise since their debut album.
Yeah I'll never get their evolution as a band. They were so good at writing poppy post hardcore songs ala Funeral For A Friend, then they decided it'd be better to become a boring alt rock band with nu metal tendencies and then to try to sound like Andrew WK lol. At least their final EP was a good return to form but it was too late for their fanbase I guess.
Hey beachdude, this is an excellent review that perfectly sums up their entire career and the changes they've been through. I can't think of another band that transitioned from post hardcore to alt rock as well as them. Lower Than Atlantis maybe, but we'll see how their new album holds up, though they're also a great band overall. Can't wait to hear both !
i LOVED their first and second ep's when I was like 14/15. liked their first full length but damn from there it was just downhill rapidly.
Thank you for the kind words! I definitely agree, this band has evolved so nicely over the years without losing any of their passion or distinctiveness imo.
Nice man, great review. Really hope this album can gain traction among a wider group of fans/listeners. Would love to see them crack into the U.S. market, hopefully by opening for a big US band to get them exposure. They have a sound I think a lot of people here would appreciate/come back to, so excited to see where they go
Yeah I totally agree... I was really hoping they would make a dent in the U.S. with Old Souls and it didn't happen, so maybe this time.
Had no idea they had a new album coming out, very excited! Speaking of opening for a big US band, The 1975 had a tour announcement a few days ago...... Wishful thinking
That would be a fantastic set of bands to hear in one evening. Maybe have UK band Fickle Friends be the opener, then Deaf Havana, then The 1975. Pretty much my dream bill right now
Got this on vinyl today. Really really loving this. But yeah I think Happiness is my favourite by far, but there's not a bad song on it. Early top 3 is Happiness, L.O.V.E. and Seattle.
They were asked today on a live webcast who they would like to tour with an they mentioned Turnover. That would be a fantastic tour, I need it to happen.
