I was actually watching some of the movie earlier. While it didn't really compare to the show at all, they did a good job finishing some of those character arcs. It is a show of such adult complexity. The love triangle between Bullock, Alma, and Mrs. Bullock is so tragic because passion has to be secondary to the expectations society has on them. Everyone has to know but everyone has to pretend not to know.
That whole part is really interesting. ESP cuz we know Bullock deep down at least when we are first introduced to him, is a good man.
His marriage to Martha isn't real at first anyway. She was his brother's wife and he was taking care of her. They mention using a bundling board when she first arrives, so they aren't even intimate. Alma is his true love but he doesn't want to scandalize Martha or her son. They are victims of the time; if is was the 21st century there would be no expectation for a man to take in his brothers' widow, but that goes back to Deuteronomy.
