This is a great series to watch with subtitles on. The intricacies of the language are really what makes the show so memorable. It is elevated to that Shakespearean level that obviously would have been really rare to hear in a place like Deadwood, but it captures the way in which people coded their more provocative language in kinder terms.

I'm on season 3 now. Some other highlights so far have been Alma and Al meeting for the first time, what a gentleman, how different from that monster Hearst. That bicycle ride scene was so great too, even brought a smile to Walcott's face.

Omg eff yes, just watched Dority and Turner fight. I was so worried about Dan there for a minute. Amazing how this show has made me care about a murderer.

As good as this show is, the theater troupe is such a boring distraction, especially as the conflict with Hearst had just started to flare up.

I watched the first episode or two of this years ago and never continued. Really need to pick it up again someday.

The Sopranos is a landmark and deserves all the praise it receives, but Deadwood is almost perfect from beginning to end. There is something so beautiful about the way the dialogue is written; it is so clearly anachronistic, with even the the lowest characters sounding Skakespearean, but it creates its own unique universe. The consensus Mt. Rushmore of television dramas is pretty much set with The Sopranos-The Wire-Man Men-Breaking Bad, but this deserves a place too.

The fact that it was canceled hurts its reputation to people, but they ended the last season well. It works a lot better than truncated seasons like the last season of The Wire.

Still haven’t watched more than season 1 of mad men but I’d replace breaking bad with deadwood

I would too. Breaking Bad would not be that close for me, but it is the popular consensus.

I would highly recommend Milch's show after Deadwood, John from Cincinnati. It only lasted one season because it was so weird, but it had a proper ending. It is about a man who shows up to a surfing town and only repeats what people say, is immune from injury or death, and people begin to start levitating.

The corruption of a person and the depths of human depravity is very easy to find in prestige dramas, but what makes Deadwood pretty unique is the way that Swearengen becomes the protector of the town. Not by his own choice, of course, but because he recognizes that keeping the town safe from Tolliver and then Hearst will lead to more money. Bullock is the Boy Scout but sooner or later someone would have killed him; it takes Swearengen's own knowledge of criminal dealings to be able to understand what others are planning. His monologues while he receives oral sex (can you imagine a show today even trying that?) reveals the walls he built up from a childhood of pain and abandonment, and as Trixie explains late in the show, he has created his own version of a family, keeping a handicapped woman safe and treating his henchmen like sons. He is one of the best characters in television.

Yeah they promoted him as a main character, poster art and everything.

The Shield did it the funniest, though. A guy propped up as the lead gets in the first episode.
