Weird to see Watchmen listed as part of Snyder’s good streak, lol. That thing is such a dud; Zack’s strengths and weaknesses are not equipped for the layered, metatextual things Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons were doing with the original comics. (Though, in a world with the shitty Doomsday Clock series, the “purity” of those characters as a tool for their original purpose is long gone, lol, so it doesn’t really matter.) I think there’s a pretty good, but still certainly imperfect, Superman movie buried in Man of Steel. It’d work a lot better with some re-editing to cut the worst bits and adjust the structure. The toughest dissonance is how the final act strives to be realistic by showing civilians in Metropolis in very 9/11 circumstances, while also leaning into how awesome and exciting and “cool” the large-scale action is. That’s not an impossible balance to have (I think the following year’s Godzilla did something similar), but it does take a subtlety that’s not how this maximalist “himbo auteur” works. At this point, I think my favorite Snyder adaptation of a comic book has to be Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - Ultimate Edition. That one really takes what Zack’s trying with both his Watchmen and his Man of Steel, and does both more successfully than either of those. (Except, it doesn’t have bearded Cavill.) I think I also prefer Zack Snyder’s Justice League. That one could be a half hour shorter without becoming as incoherent as Whedon’s slop, and it has a couple baffling moments. However, it’s the most successful as doing “mythic superheroes,” and its found family side feels personal for this father of adopted kids (especially with the closing tribute to his daughter who ended her life during production).
I personally though BVS: Ultimate Edition was the worst comic book movie I've ever seen, but to each their own! I know Watchmen was imperfect but it was a ton of fun to watch for me personally
It is without a doubt the worst comic book movie I’ve ever seen personally. So you’re not alone there.
Not the worst I’ve seen, I like afleck’s performance, even if I think he was written poorly. But it has some pretty low lows
Hyperbole. Not far from being literal though. I’ve seen the trailer once and that was in-front of Barbie. Whereas I unfortunately saw ads for the flash left and right.
If we see Gadot’s Wonder Woman with a Superman that isn’t Cavill that’s going to be a moronic move. Gunn should commit 100% with bringing in new actors.
Glenn Howerton Shares Lex Luthor Fan Art, Fueling Superman: Legacy Casting Rumors He's probably too old since Gunn is looking for a younger cast, but would be dope
I saw a stat recently that said the last 7 DCEU movies have all failed to make back their production budgets, not sure how accurate that is but it’s mind blowing that they keep investing resources into this. Shazam was the last DCEU film to succeed financially. WB just needs to cut bait and move on. Just give us solid stand alone films.
I mean, if I was the studio, I’d let James Gunn at least put out one film before just giving up on DC movies.
