If it's a clean reboot of the universe, I think this makes the most sense. If they're planning on keeping certain elements and characters from the current iteration of the universe, they're going to need to do flashpoint twice (including the upcoming movie) to make it make sense.
I feel like between this and the Patty Jenkins scenario, there's a lot of carefully worded statements being thrown around to save face that only end up being confusing because no one seems on the same page. Like either Jenkins is refusing to budge or she's totally willing to play ball. Either Gunn is open to working with Cavill in the future or he's not. Which is it? I do, for the moment, feel bad for Gunn though. Since he's the more known of the duo overseeing this new DC, he's the one who is ultimately gonna take the blame for any decisions that go over like a lead balloon.
Gunn 100% deserves a chance to do things his way and not just work his way around what already existed but I really felt like the performers weren’t the issue
I mean, this absolutely is Gunn's fault lol it's his decision in the end. What an absolutely shitty thing to do after Cavill left The Witcher for this.
I understand why they want a new actor for Superman, but man, I wish we could have seen Cavill in the role when it was written by someone who knew the character.
I've been reading some other articles and I guess I misinterpreted Gunn's statement. I thought he was saying that they were looking into other opportunities for Cavill to return as Superman, but I guess it was more other opportunities for Cavill to play a different character.
We'll always have Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - The Ultimate Cut and Zack Snyder's Justice League. Hopefully the next Superman film has a director with a clear creative voice, an actor who fits that voice well, and a costume with the red trunks.
Cavill deserved better, even Affleck did. Honestly great castings with poor executions. Unfortunately I’m tired and all for starting over at this point, as long as Reeves Gotham is left alone. That said, if Gunn is starting fresh like this and keeping SS peeps (including his wife) that’s going to be weird.
I think the problem is you can’t be halfway rebooted. While I’ll miss some of the actors, they’re too connected to the old stuff that didn’t work and in order to move forward, there needs to be a clean slate. Cavill is the one I’m most disappointed to see go because I believe they could use him as a more hopeful, upbeat Superman that fits the character better. The issue is people like my Dad or best friend who don’t follow all the movies and would wonder how it connects and isn’t that the same Superman though? Even the two concurrent Batman’s are gonna be strange for them and likely the general public.
I watched BvS Ultimate the other month and had a lot of fun with it! Now that it's not the cornerstone of these characters on film, and Snyder has moved on to his own projects, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe formula has gotten tired... I'm able to really dig the absurd audacity of it.
