The way this describes Supergirl lore... isn't right? And, a Supergirl origin that largely skipped Superman was already nailed on Superman. Meh. If they really can't just pay Cavill enough to keep him but still wanna use the Superman mythos, they should just make a Superboy film with Krypto and the Legion of Superheroes. I'd love to see Cavill as Hyperion in a Squadron Supreme film. Or, he could play either Hyperion or Sentry in Avengers. Go full Superman with the actor in the way DC didn't until it was too late. I'd never turn down MBJ in any superhero film, but while there is a black Superman in the comics who's pretty cool (and even if there weren't, I'd support WB making one)... I'd kinda rather see them make an Icon film. Dwayne McDuffie tackled the implications of a black Superman better in that Milestone series than I think WB could from scratch. Plus, dabbling in Milestone could get us Static Shock. When it comes to Superman and race, I'm of two minds. On one hand, getting a Jewish actor, writer, & director and leaning into the roots of the character is cool. On the other hand, telling a white immigration allegory in 2018 is kinda weak. An actor of Latin descent (I really like Oscar Isaac) is the most obvious choice. Going for a Palestinian or, dang, maybe even Assyrian actor would be even cooler, but they'd never be willing to go there.
I don't really see how they would think that Nightwing/Supergirl movies could be that successful without decent trinity movies before them, at least set up the characters most widely known before branching into the lesser known mythos.
I liked Cavill in the role. This is just another reason WB/DC might be better off just making standalone movies. Also, hmmmm. Cavill's manager.
If they want to keep going the universe route they should either use Flashpoint, or just start in a different Earth.
Maybe get Cavill to do a small part handing down the role to Supergirl just so it’s a smoother transition.
I still think it'd be so weird to have the first Flash movie be Flashpoint. We haven't established really anything about Barry or his world and going straight into that doesn't seem right.... All pay off with no build up lol. I'm fine with having the 5 DCEU movies we have so far and everything else just be stand alone.
Oscar Issac is definitely a face I could see in a Superman outfit and that would be amazing. I’ll have to agree with your last sentence. I don’t see any studios doing that until Kamala Khan appears in the MCU and makes some inevitable cash. I would love to see MBJ in more comic roles. He is a very charismatic actor and if given a good script, he can really nail it. There are other DC characters I can imagine him in (John Stewart comes to mind or even a non-white Bruce Wayne). I just never imagined him as Superman so the image in my head is a bit off. I’d definitely be intrigued by where Warner Bros would take Superman with MBJ in the role but ultimatly the outcome with depend on if they can actually get a decent screenwriter while getting MBJ.
he claims there are two projects in development. There is still hope! Hopefully they go through with the story of him mentoring his daughter. I love the idea of that.
Honestly, while I used to want Idris Elba as Bruce Wayne, anymore I tend to agree with Marc Bernardin that Bruce makes more sense white. He's harder to racebend than 90+% of white characters (see: Peter Parker). He's supposed to represent a certain type of old money that's pretty white. They could make a biracial Bruce work, but I'd rather see them racebend a different character or invent someone new. Now, Michael B Jordan as a Dick Grayson Batman, with Damien Wayne as his sidekick? I'd be all over that.
In other news, I like this. Don't think it was posted yet. Derek Mears Has Been Cast as the Creature in DC’s “Swamp Thing” Series!
