Would be nice, but they've been clear that Battinson is not the Dark Knight for the new DCU.

On the one hand I get it, on the other hand I respect that Gunn is thinking more about what's exciting and not what takes place in chronological order in the comics.

Arguably if Suicide Squad had been a better movie, it would have done better financially. We'll never know, but being a trainwreck certainly didn't help, and Gunn has the benefit of having made the good Suicide Squad movie.

Me. I’ve never made a studio lose money. My record is clean.

I agree suicide squad could have done better at the box office if it was dog water, but currently the box office is at a place where even generally favored films like Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four are not doing so great. Superman is getting pretty good results but he’s Superman. I don’t see Clayface doing numbers even if it’s as well received as the recent 3 cbm movies this year. Just seems like an unnecessary gamble when you want to draw in an audience for the first few films of the DCU.

Well horror seems to be doing pretty well and I doubt it's going to have a huge budget. I'd say they've got nothing to lose.

If you’re not, like, a producer on the films or whatever, I don’t know why you’d care if a movie that hasn’t even been made yet is gonna do at the box office, lol. What should matter to an audience member is if it’s good or fun or interesting, etc. It being profitable doesn’t matter except insofar as, if you do end up liking it, I guess you’d probably wanna see more.

Imo, it’s really cool that, after initially announcing “Brave and the Bold” as an early film in this universe, a Clayface movie got a script worth developing into a movie faster than that Batman one did. It’s also cool that they’re going for different tones and genres and budget levels, instead of exclusively big blockbusters for all the most obvious possible characters until those are exhausted.

Maybe this will be a successful swing. Maybe it’ll miss. But it’s neat either way.

It's also probably the only chance we'll have of seeing Clayface on the big screen since no one seems interested in doing anything fantastical with Batman.

The box office matters because as soon as one tanks the studio will try to interfere more. That would be concerning, especially since the DCU would still be in the beginning stages.

Look at the DCEU for example. Sure, MoS was kind of mid but it wasn’t a horrible start. Then BvS had a historic drop after its first week and WB got very strict with the production of every film from there-on-out. Box office has a huge effect on creative freedom.

But think logically. They're not going to expect a film based on a second or third tier Batman villain to do billions, they're going to temper expectations accordingly, and I think the budget for the film will reflect that. I think you're looking at this in the wrong way.

And the reason I keep bringing up budget is because horror films are generally lower budget, so when one does really well, it's a windfall. I highly doubt they're going to give this the same budget as Superman.

I think it just comes down to what James has been saying all along: he refuses to greenlight a movie until he is given a good, completed script. I think that's great. Marvel loves to shit things out before a script is even made, and then makes changes on the fly during filming. It just isn't sustainable. I think he's being pretty smart about this from both a business and quality perspective

I'm sure he'll want to fast track a Batman movie as soon as he sees a script he loves

  16. Just had a thought, what if Superman and The Batman are indeed in two different universes, but they don't stay separate? Like in the Injustice games except take nothing else from the storyline bc we don't need another evil Superman variant

Not sure we need a DC version of the Multiverse Saga.

It would be very funny (derogatory) if DC Studios got off to a great start, looked at Marvel floundering during a “multiverse saga,” and immediately did their own.

  20. it doesn't need to be a saga. if the Arrowverse can do it across five episodes Gunn can do it in a single movie

    I don't see the point.

For starters, it depends on what Reeves and Pattinson want to do, and if they want it, then I'm sure they could write them in the same universe without resorting to a multiverse plot.

But if they don't want it, then are we talking about recasting Batman anyway? Or having WB enact some clause to force them to participate? What's the endgame here?

  22. Endgame is a marvel movie.

Gunn said there were multiple universes right? So if the intention is to keep them separate, there could be potential for crossover somewhere down the line, maybe not anytime soon, and maybe not even anything big, and ofc only if all parties were interested

  23. Isn’t the new season of Peacemaker very much introducing another universe? I only saw the first trailer.

I guess I assumed we were talking about a way to get Pattinson into the DCU instead of another new Batman, as a means to an end, not just as a cameo appearance.
