Recently watched Mask of the Phantasm finally and enjoyed it. Then today I watched Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman. It was a fun watch, but I wouldn't put it in the top tier of the animated films.
Hmm, ya the way they cut the trailer makes it feel like the other DC Animated stuff. I would guess it's still similar in tone to Return of the Caped Crusaders.
Yeah, great to have more West, but the shadow of Batman gliding in one of the scenes felt so weird for this era.
Oh was that your first time seeing Mask of the Phantasm? It's a really good story and more adult than I expected. Mystery of the Batwoman didn't really do anything for me, but I'm a sucker for that animation because it makes me feel like I'm back in the animated series again lol.
It was! And yeah, that's the main reason I enjoyed it haha. I might write something up on Phantasm for my Substream feature "What took you so long?" AKA where I embarrassingly admit what movies I'm just now watching for the first time haha.
Batman and Harley Quinn was kinda meh. I like that it had a mostly goofy tone, but the comedy was pretty hit-or-miss and the dramatic moments left more to be desired. That said, the animation was solid and I really dug the opening credits ha. If they're not going to explore the more adult themes surrounding Harley's character in an in-depth way, then they could've easily passed on the PG-13 rating. Her and Nightwing hooking up seemed pretty unnecessary. Worst stretch of the movie was an extended fart joke followed by 2 musical numbers.
Ya, there were a lot of shots where Harley was drawn in a way that awkwardly accentuated her figure, and it was absurdly distracting.
Im still looking forward to seeing it. They had Harley topless randomly and fucking Deadshot in the Suicide Squide cartoon but it was still an fantastic movie.
8min featurette about the upcoming Gotham by Gaslight movie. Shows a bunch of footage though, so avoid it if you don't wanna see a lot.
I've been watching The Batman on Netflix, it's my first time really watching animated DC stuff since I was a kid, and I'm really impressed. Of course, when I was about halfway through the series they let me know that it was leaving Netflix September 1st >:( I made it halfway through season 4 by the end of August, and luckily my local library carries all five seasons so I'll be fine to finish it whenever I want. Looking forward to that, plus moving on to more DC stuff when I'm done.
I posted my thoughts a few posts back. Overall, I thought it was a miss fire, and I believe a lot of critics expressed the same.
So I was trying to wait for WB to release some official BTAS images since Fansided has a strict image policy (and a WB publicist told me they were working on them), but it's taking them forever to get those done. Decided to continue my BTAS retrospective series with "P.O.V." today. Batman: The Animated Series retrospective: P.O.V.
