I’m a huge DMB fan and they are starting to finally get some long overdue recognition. That’s great for them.....but this is probably their worst record. I don’t know wtf Dave was thinking with some of these. Fortunately there are a few solid tunes to make it worth plucking a few to listen to.

Can’t wait for the BTCS 20th anny Vinyl. One of the most underrated records from the 90’s. Gorgeous album.

You really think this is one of their worst? I think this album has some of Dave’s best hooks in a while. Also the production is spot on

It's solid after a few listens. I enjoyed Big Whiskey and Away From the World quite a bit, so I'm not sure where this will end up in comparison to those 2. These guys don't have a bad album though.

I do miss the occasional sax/trumpet solos, I won’t say I miss the violin bc... ya

I think some of it is fatigue with a few of these songs. Idea of You is great.....it’s also 12 years old. I’ve been listening to it since 2006. If I was hearing it for the first time again it would probably knock me on my ass. I’ll have more thoughts in a little bit.

Just realized I have a version of “idea of you” from 2008 on a live track haha, what a song.

I think I was initially hard on the album. But I think it’s pretty consistent with their output post Everyday (which I tend to like more than most outside of a few total duds). I would cut “She” and “Come Tomorrow” from this and I also think “When I’m Weary” is a little unnecessary. That would benefit the album a ton.

Highlights for me are “Do You Remember” “That Girl is You” “Black and Blue Bird” and “Samurai Cop”.

Everything else is pretty solid as well but like I said nearly every song here outside of 3-4 tracks are at least 3-12 years old. And most of the new ones are the weakest. DMB has always benefitted from letting songs marinade live and the 8-9 songs that have are strong just....old

I guess by just causally seeing them over the last few years I’ve been able to avoid that issue.

This is your life, are you who you want to be?

First single in awhile. New album has got to be in the works right?

New record actually has some of the most assured songwriting from Dave in some time imo. Some really cool and nice songs, it does feel a little patched together as an album though, but nice to have them back. I really like “Looking for a Vein”, “The Ocean and the Butterfly”, “After Everything” and “All You Wanted Was Tomorrow”

Surprised “The Only Thing” wasn’t the lead single.

studio “Break Free” was never gonna live up to my expectations, 06 Fenway for life.

nothing remotely close to some of the stinkers on Come Tomorrow.

It’s a step up from come tomorrow and stand up but I don’t have it ahead of anything else. These are really solid Dave solo songs with the band being used more as a backing band. I’m hoping one day we get another true DMB record, but either way I’m very happy with the songs and will enjoy listening to them. Excited to hear them live this summer though, and I think these songs will grow a lot in a live setting.

That’s where I would slot it as well. I don’t like Away From the World or Big Whiskey as much as I did when they came out but there are still some really great tunes on both of those records (Sweet, Snow Outside, Why I Am, Squirm) and they feel like more cohesive studio efforts. At this point I kind of wish Dave Matthews would just put out solo records, if you would have told me Some Devil would be the only solo album he would ever put out I’d never believe it. Oddly the 2 best songs they’ve done since the heyday might be “Virginia in the Rain” and “Again and Again” from Come Tomorrow.

Honestly I’m 36, just give me 10 “The Ocean and the Butterfly”’s, that’s all I want from DMB right now. A great 10 song record I can put on while I make breakfast.

Is this dude still the most hilarious and most non-shalant musician ever?

I don’t follow him or his music but he’s coming to my city and my coworkers are raving about it and all I can think about about are the late 90’s/earths 2000’s.

He’s incredibly funny still. When he talked about madman’s eyes on the xm stream he was basically saying fuck you to gun nuts and doesn’t give a shit about losing fans over it! Loved it.

I’ve been casually listening to this the last couple days, I’m starting to think it’s their best collection of songs since Everyday/Busted Stuff. Very very low on cringe, surprisingly melodic and buoyant.

Big whiskey and away from the world are better. But I put this above stand up and come tomorrow!

I will listen to this soon. DMB is (or was, at least) such a great live band and they have always just struggled in the studio, for some reason. They often leave their best songs off records........pick weird producers......I have a feeling they just hate the studio. It feels like every album since about 2000 is such a chore for them to get done and released.

At this point I'd be fine if they just recorded new albums live and had 8-9 minute songs rather than trying to make short "studio songs" which they are clearly uncomfortable with.
