Pre-2004 me: I'M SO EXCITED Post-2004 me: I'm so scared... He hasn't done anything good in over a decade... and the trend continues.
I wouldn't go that far because I genuinely dislike The Motions, and think a few others are duds. But the highs on that album are great. Definitely think it's an underrated album.
Which others do you dislike? I'm not a huge fan of "The Motions" either, but I think all of the other songs are great. The acoustic records have always been, for me at least, a little too one-note. I see them as a couple of really outstanding songs and a bunch of weaker material. I've always preferred the extra variation in mood, tempo, and sound that we got with the full-band albums.
Not a fan of Everybody Learns from Disaster, I Know About You, and Even Now. Admittedly, I think I listened to Even Now so much before album release I think I just became numb to it, haha. I feel like that track was released in February and the album came out in November/December? However, I think the title track and Blame it on the Changes are easily two of his most underrated songs.
Listening to Alter the Ending for the first time in years right now. Until Morning is a damn good song.
Ah, "I Know About You" is probably the other one I'd label as disposable. I think "Everybody Learns from Disaster" is fantastic, though, and I love "Even Now" as a more restrained moment on that record. The title track and "Until Morning" have always been my favorites. I'd put the latter among the five best songs he's ever written.
Until Morning is definitely one of the biggest sounding songs he's written. I love it. This conversation has made me stop the new John Mayer to listen to this album again, haha
Are we all just gonna listen to this album... Also forgot Twin Forks was a thing and might play that today...
Definitely second this statement! I love it all Additionally, I loved the full band variations of a lot of his solo acoustic stuff he played this past summer. They did a great job of making everything sound bigger for the amphitheater setting.
