Tree City makes me believe Tilian DID get that. He sounds great on this. Live, he sounded terrible. Twice.
Thanks for clarifying it a bit. Agree on the Tilian point haha. Is that the main thing or is there another major effect or process that gets rid of that "roomy" sound? ive recorded things on my own just for fun and have no idea how I'd begin to make them sound like studio recordings (aside from the obvious stuff like better equipment).
Live rooms are usually much larger I think, so that would probably have something to do with it. Usually instruments in full studios are recorded in separate rooms specifically designed for recording that instrument, so every instrument sounds clear and totally natural. Also, there's usually just a ton of layering done to remove empty spaces in songs, and live they don't do that so it leaves a lot of breathing room. I'm pretty sure the mics they use doing live are different than if they weren't too. There's also probably a ton of equipment and technical stuff that I just don't get. haha
You sure you went through the right doors? Haha I've seen DGD with Tilian four times this year and I thought he sounded just as good as in the studio. My only complaint is whoever mixes their sound live must hate the sound of his voice because he was consistently buried under the sound of the band-- the only time this didn't happen was at the 10 year show in AZ.
Seen Tilian twice. One time he was bad, the other was alright. Having that high voice is a gamble when it comes to performing a full tour singing every night.
Oh yeah I totally agree. I sing, but I can't hit notes he does. I just like seeing vocalists that can rep what they do in the studio, live. I was let down when I saw Tilian live. I don't mean to be harsh, but it was not good at all. He was super flat, and was literally not hitting the octaves for certain songs, specifically the older ones. Tree city has me like "da fuck? same dude? this sounds amazing."
Tilian, in general, is amazing. Can't think of many out there like him - he hits notes so high I can't even do them in that weird fake-falsetto voice men do!
It's all relevant to your voice and vocal chords. There are plenty of people who hit those notes, it just sounds different cause Tilian is super high pitched. It was actually a huge turn off for me with everything he did pre-DGD.
I actually didn't get into Acceptance Speech until like early 2015 because of Tilian's voice. I gave it a spin and decided Tilian's voice annoyed me and abandoned it solely based on that which is wild to me now since my opinion has done a complete 180 and I love that album and his voice. I can see it. I think Claudio has an even higher voice, come to it
Claudio has a lot more range than Tilian. They both can hit about the same high notes, though I think Tilian's still sounds higher due to not having as much low end to his voice. But Claudio can sing a lot lower than Tilian can, Claudio has one the widest ranges of anyone right now I think.
Speaking of Coheed, was anyone here ever a part of their fansite's forum, Cobalt & Calcium? There was a DGD thread that pretty much became the official DGD presence on the internet because Zac Garren himself joined! It was fucking wild, especially around the time when Zac got kicked out! I swear some AP people were on there?
Definitely. They do very different things though. I think it's hard to compare anyone to Claudio. I know for awhile people compared Vic from Pierce the Veil to him. Just, weird. hahaha Tilian is closest to Kellin Quinn of all the male vocalists who sing insanely high, I'd say. They both have that kind of head voice but not really thing going for 'em.
Tilian's a tenor (obviously) and you must have seen him on an off night. I'm a vocalist and I've toured with DGD before and his voice was spot on every night throughout that tour, even with the older material. I personally think his vocal range and ability (more clearly demonstrated with his solo material) absolutely smokes Claudio's.
This is hands down the best live album I have heard. I'm getting this on vinyl ASAP. I literally think every song currently playing is the best on the album.
Think I posted this (or another song) in the AP DGD thread but here's one for the chorus one - god DAMN is this man talented!!!
Zach is pretty active in the Facebook music group I'm a part of... makes sense, because it's basically a big post-hardcore/DGD worship group haha
Is it an open group? link me! His music opinions were often criticised in that Coheed message board lol
Security Check Required Pretty cool group, pretty heavily focused on post-hardcore and other technical rock genres but open to other genres too.
Awesome video, but supports my judgement of Tilian's live. You can't say he's hitting those notes at the beginning. Made me cringe.
I know I've heard Tilian sing better than that, but he was slipping off key here, bad. On top of that he sounds really out of breath. I'm guessing he couldn't hear himself. Mingus, however...very impressive, and it looks completely effortless for him.
