Stoked for some new DGD. Loved Mothership and hoping for a killer follow-up. I don't know where I'd like them to push themselves musically for this one.
Mothership was pretty sweet, IG was a letdown with only a few highlights, and AS is still their best record to me. Not seeing a consistent trend upward or downward in the Tilian era, so I'm cautiously optimistic about the new record. I've only really gotten into the Tilian records (so far), but at least in this era, I don't see how you can enjoy this band if you fixate on the lyrics. Jon screams cringey nonsense, Tillan is cheesy 3/4 of the time, and Will is cranking out awesome music a lot faster than anyone in the band can come up with something decent to sing over it.
i'd kinda lost track of DGD after DBM2 and acceptance speech brought me back in. the guitars on that album are splendid. IG didn't do much for me but still a worthy discog addition.
Agree with all of that. The only one that comes close to AS for me is Happiness. IG is definitely my least favorite DGD album. It's an oddball in their discography considering it's sandwiched between two of their best releases.
I feel like Instant Gratification is a perfect album all the through, except for the second-to-last song, Variation. Mothership I think is a massive step up in overal quality, but in songs like "Philospher King" "Man Of The Year" "Deception" and "Petting Zoo Justice" the singwriting is a bit clunkier and less polished. Exposed, Frozen One, and Chocolate Jackalope are some of my favorite DGD songs, and Tillian has some killer melodies in all the songs. I feel like Jon's screaming gets a bit too high and grating throughout.
I couldn't ever even put AS in my top 3. That album I never return to except for Macy and Honey Revenge, with a few others here and there. Tilian sounds over-produced and Will's riffs didn't flow as well. Mothership feels like a thought out album, that was intentionally structured as is. Even the band says AS was Tilian coming into the band midway through the writing process and figuring out where to put his parts, etc etc. IG and Mothership, they were writing more to cater his style and make it flow better. Which I think they very well did.
Lol instead of a song bracket we should just bang out an unorthodox album bracket. Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean Vs Downtown Battle Mountain II Deathstar Vs Happiness Acceptance Speech Vs Instant Gratification Round 2: Winner of match 1 Vs Downtown Battle Mountain Winner of match 3 Vs Mothership Round 3: Winner of match 2 Vs both winners of Round 2.
This band's music, vocals, and lyrics are such an odd juxtaposition that I think different fans enjoy DGD for vastly different reasons. I feel like if we listed favorite songs, there'd be tons of cases where someone's top 3 would all be in someone else's bottom tier. I more or less followed Tilian to DGD after he left Tides of Man; I'll admit, I almost wanted the Dreamhouse II we were tragically denied. Along those lines, I absolutely loved AS's darker, more atmospheric, almost prog feel. Then IG comes out with a strikingly different, almost party-like aesthetic, and that didn't do much for me... songs like "Eagle vs. Crows" and DoaS are just ugh to me. At least Mothership is a cool middle ground between the two with plenty of material for both sides.
I think Death Of A Strawberry might be an all time favorite for me. Will effortlessly sews together easy going chords with hammer-on and other licks while flowing out of intense and mellow. I think that track is one of their best with Tilian overal as well. I just recently caught the video of the acoustic version him and Will did and it made me like it even more.
Am I the only who likes WISIRO? The Robot vs The Heroin Battle Of Vietnam is one of my favorite DGD songs of all time.
I find that in a few spots they actually have some good stuff on there. The production quality and the awful way the vocals sound are far too grating on my brain though.
done. Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean Vs Downtown Battle Mountain II Deathstar Vs Happiness Acceptance Speech Vs Instant Gratification Round 2: DBM II Vs Downtown Battle Mountain Acceptance Speech Vs Mothership Round 3: Death Star Vs DBM (runner up) Vs Mothership
