The album is done so I'm pretty sure there will be at least a single before the end of the year... I think the album could come either late this year or early 2017, but I'm betting more on next year.
The Blowtorch is Applied to the Sugar. Amazing song. I used to love them. Not as into them as then, but I'm hopeful for the new album.
I might be weird for this, but I kind of view music both subjectively and objectively and try not to let either influence the other. As such, my rankings of my favorite albums, and what I think are the best albums are totally different. For DGD my favorite list is: Mothership > Instant Gratification > Acceptance Speech > Happiness > Deathstar > DBMII > DBM But my best list is: Mothership > Happiness > Instant Gratification = Deathstar > DBM > Acceptance Speech > DBMII
IG is way overrated from my point of view. There's almost nothing I enjoy on the second half. The whole carefree party vibe does nothing for me as it pertains to this band, especially stuff like Eagle vs. Crows and DoaS. AS is so much more interesting, varied and atmospheric. I've still yet to really dig into the pre-Tilian stuff, but my initial impressions from skimming it were that Jonny > Kurt, purely in terms of vocals. It's possible the lyrics and/or music were better during the Kurt era, but his vocals seem a solid tier lower than the other two guys they've had. I was trying to give Happiness a solid listen thru the other day and his voice felt like it was holding the whole thing back.
DoaS is one of my top 3 DGD songs, literally my favorite from an instrumental point of view. WotN is top 3 too so I rate IG very highly!
Been listening to this a ton trying to get it to grow and it kind of has. But man. Flossy Dickey Bounce is horrible. Easily the worst song they've ever made.
Blue Dream is okay. The end phone call is the dumbest/worst thing this band has ever done though. And the lyrics (both Mess and Craig's) are kind of dumb. Musically it's just an average DGD song to me though.
I remember the first time I heard it, I thought Jonny's first verse was great. Then the song goes into the worst transition they have. It's followed by their worst chorus..
Yeah Blue Dream is easily the best song on DBMII as far as I'm concerned. As well as the clear standout Jonny vocal performance on that album... pretty much the only time on that album he didn't seem to be 100% phoning it in imo.
Before I knew anything about Jonny Craig and what kind of person he's like, his whole history, etc... the DGD and Emarosa tracks I heard absolutely floored me as a fan of good vocals, with Blue Dream possibly flooring me the most. That song really is a knockout vocal performance.
Speaking of Jonny, I know a friend who went to South By So What festival and from what he saw he said Jonny seemed in the worst condition he's ever seen him :( High out of his mind and I guess he was barely even conscious when people wanted to take photos. Also apparently his girlfriend at one point afterwards was yelling throughout the festival trying to find him and that he wasn't responding to her calls or texts. I'm not a fan of Jonny as a person but I really do hope he can get it together at some point in the future, addiction like his is not something I'd wish on my worst enemy.
I think "Flossie Dickey Bounce" is a fun song, definitely not the worst on the album, let alone their entire discography... I'd take it over "Petting Zoo Justice"
I've really warmed to 'Exposed' now - the guitar effect on that little solo remains trash, but I find myself humming/whistling the melody incessantly these days, and from an instrumental perspective it's refreshingly simple so 2 thumbs up 2 DGD well done
Don't be surprised when people are also saying Blue Dream is the standout track on DBM2. Literally one of the absolute worst tracks they have done, and PZJ blows away Floss Dickie Bounce, Young Robot, and Man Of The Year for me.
Inspire the Liars is so good. Was on its way to being one of my favorite DGD tracks. Then I looked up Mess' lyrics. Big mistake. He really fell off a cliff on this record
I had the same reaction when I inadvertently read the "butthole full of cancer" line in this thread. I try just to enjoy this band for what they are, but when it comes down to it, the music is often so good that the lyrics do them a grave disservice.
