agree 100%. at least kurt's were real and didnt rely on surrealism. none of the others pull off surrealism well.
No question Kurt is the best out of all of them(lyrically and performance wise). DBM JC era is legendary, but again his lyrics are dumb.
Top five still even after Mothership: Burning Down pt. 2 NASA Alex English Lemon Meringue Tie Antlion
the whole "i have been reading lies" part in open your eyes and look north may be my favorite DGD moment though. bone chilling.
i think i'm bad at interpreting lyrics, i don't really get what's going on in "Lost", i thought the use of the word "homophobic" was odd, but is it supposed to be Tilian talking about himself? or referring to someone else? basically i read the lyrics and think hmm, someone is getting sarcastic about being a bully and upset that everyone is making a big deal out it. people seem really offended by that song though, anyone want to help me out with an explanation?
carl barker is lit but how happiness. I like it but it's one of the most regular sounding tracks they've done I think I'll second the backward pumpkin song love and antlion
I honestly always felt like the best structured song they have is It's Safe To Say.. The bridge and outro are definitely one of my top 3 JC parts.
I have no clue how to rank their albums - I really love Mothership so far, but went back and relistened to the rest of their stuff and all of them are really strong to me. Even DBM2, which I initially found really weak, has grown on me a lot. I love Happiness (Kurt is hands down the best lyricist they've had). I like S/T, but rank it lower than IG and DBM - I think the production turns me off of it, as I even like the S/T songs way more on Tree City Sessions. I know JC is an incredible vocalist, too, and I'm thinking back on how bummed I was when he first left, but I legitimately like all of their Kurt/Tilian output so much more in every way. Tilian is my favorite vocalist of the three, I think.
Top 3 songs for me off the top of my head are Carl Barker, Reprogramming, and Cuba. Would probably be different if I thought about it more.
last week, norma jean had my current album of the year, and i think mothership may be surpassing it; never thought i'd say that. i think my DGD ranking is now mothership > DBM > acceptance speech > DBM2/S-T/Happiness > WISIRO. its been over a week and i'm just not getting bored of mothership. its just unrelentingly good.
I have no idea what my favorite song on Happiness is. That's one of those albums where every song is truly as good as the last. I do jam Self Trepanation a lot lately though. That song is such a great example of their versatility as a band, nothing like it on the last 3 albums
I wish Mess was on Happiness, or they went full clean vocals. Will is alright but it just pales in comparison. Still up there as my favorite album from them, but I usually give the edge to Deathstar.
