I think some of Tilian's best are on this album, as well as his worst. Deception, Inspire, and Betrayed are probably my favorite Tilian songs they've got out of the 3 albums. As for Mess, I may not understand them but his lyrics make me grin ear to ear. If that's his intention, then job well done. I hope he never changes his style. My favorite part for him on this album is actually in BBTG where he says: Take a sip from the drain The flavor tastes like nothing Or nothing tastes the same cause nothing is never there I know what I'm talking 'bout I believe the words in my mouth 'Cause I can say that it was all just a metaphor Pretty much interpreted that as some self awareness that his lyrics are his own and he give whatever explanation people want to hear to understand, but it doesn't matter regardless.
I adore the 2nd half of FDB so much I could never skip it!!! I even like the "hyah!" sound effects in the 1st half
Something about "i rain destruction in the fight of my inner feels" resonates with me. Prob my face mess lyric on this album.
Now that I've given this enough listens, here's my ranking I guess, cuz it's fun to do that Happiness >>> DBM1 > DBM2 > IG > AS > S/T > Mothership
S/T Happiness DTBM DTBM2 Mothership AS IG I'm listening to listen a lot more than I thought I would. Weird
Late to this but listen to either of their albums with Kurt Travis, 100x better vocalist than Tillian or Johnny
Happiness (10/10) IG (9.5/10) Self-Titled (9.5/10) DBM1 (9/10) Mothership (8.5/10) AS (8.5/10) DBM2 (8/10) Edit: Added personal ratings to show that I consider all the albums to be fucking great, and rankings maybe look like I perhaps am not fond of the lower ones. And I'm a fucking nerd!!!
Personally, they are the only band of this genre that I listen to. I really enjoy the eccentric sound of the everything. It shouldn't work, but it does, at least in my opinion. That, and they don't do any chugging, or whatever you want to call it. No boring ass break downs. But yea, like I said, I don't listen to any Risecore, or metal at all really. It all seems so generic compared to what Will Swan and the rest of the band come up with. Basically, the guitar is fun. The vocals are enjoyable. And Jon Mess is a fucking riot.
I'd have to listen to a few to rank everything, but my top 3 are mothership, acceptance speech, and DBM I. I find the vocals of the Kurt/will era grating. Really don't get the praise for happiness and S/t.
Now I'm at: Mothership > Instant Gratification > Acceptance Speech > Happiness > self-titled > Downtown Battle Mountain II > Downtown Battle Mountain
S/T Happiness Some of Mothership 3 songs on AS DBM1 Instant Gratification DBM2 Rest of AS Rest of Mothership
Opinions and all that but listening to Flossy Dickey Bounce and imagining people putting this as their favorite DGD record gives me a rash
Flossie Dickey Bounce might be my least favorite Tilian era song... Petting Zoo Justice would be up there too but that kind of slow part saves that song for me. Overall though, I do think Mothership is the bands most cohesive and most enjoyable release. And I really do enjoy their whole discography (outside of WISIRO)
Tilian's melodies in Frozen One are otherworldly. Aka he is the chosen one, and the song is a lie. Thus needs to be re recorded.
the "Stop that you ain't no friend of mine/We don't believe your lies/Go on and live your life/Running out the back door" part of Frozen One is one of my fav parts of the whole album. Reminds me of pop-punk melody lines like Sum 41 or something?! Like, I genuinely imagine Deryck singing that part lol
Petting Zoo Justice is dgd being heavy and actually pulling it off. That Mess segment is dgd doing black metal lol
