I used to like People You Know a couple years ago (fun to play on guitar), but they've released too many good songs since then so hardly ever listen to it now.

Also, 'People You Knew' >>> 'People You Know'

also liked people you know if only for the heavier guitars and the stupid pissed off lyrics

def understand why anyone wouldn't like it

This album has so many great moments.

This is the best that Tilian has ever sounded in my opinion. I love the risks they took with this one.

Only qualm is that it might be a tad too long. I find myself looping a lot of their songs together as one continuos song when it goes on too long. I love having as much new DGD as possible, but sometimes in runs on in the background for me.

    Digging this album a ton.

This album is growing on me like a motherfucker right now. Deception through Here Comes the Winner is one of the best stretches in their whole discography.

Also Variation would fit right in on this album.

i tend to find most albums too short; 10 really bothers me, and 11 isnt much better. 12-13 is my sweet spot and when theyre all good, im a happy man.

agreed on tilian and risk-taking though. this is all i've listened to since it came out.

Tracks 1-7 are all fucking great but BBTG really saves the 2nd half of this record if you don't like Chocolate Jackalope. Exposed is made ok by the melody lines but I'm not warming to Here Comes The Winner, Petting Zoo Justice or Man Of The Year whatsoever :concerned:

I really dislike this album. I'd never listened to DGD before this, but I guess they're not for me.

I gotta be honest, this sounds like typical Risecore to me. My intent isn't to criticize anyone who likes this album, but I'm genuinely curious: is everyone who's digging this a fan of most other bands that do this sound, and if not, what draws you in about this band in particular?

Idk why people love that album so much. Tree Village, NASA, Happiness, and Carl Barker are the only tracks I ever revisit on that album. Great songs, but far from their best imo.

I'm just starting to really dive into the lyrics and try to understand any running theme for any one song, and I can't. This is Mess's best work in the sense that I have no idea what the fuck he was doing or how he does it haha.

If people are about diving into the details of lyrics, DGD probably isn't for you. Please consult with your doctor.

Finally got to listen to Mothership. Probably my favorite DGD album, but I won't set that ranking for sure until a few more plays. My favorites so far are Young Robot, Inspire the Liars and Philosopher King. Least favorite are Flossie Dickey Bounce and Petting Zoo Justice.

I'm right there with you on the favorites. Those are probably my top 3 too. "Deception" is great as well. Unfortunately, the second half of the record is a significant drop-off. "Chocolate Jackalope" is a great riff but the uber cringey parts take away from it a lot for me.

I can't imagine seeing this band as "risecore", to me they are one of the most creative bands in the genre and always seem to be pushing themselves in new directions while still having consistency.

i never liked jonny too much and hardly even listen to DBM 1 or 2, i hold a special place in my heart for the albums with kurt, but the albums with tilian honestly blow me away. the production quality jumped up a ton, and tilian's voice is mindblowing to me. although sometimes the lyrics are bad, it's in a way that i appreciate because it's always stuck in my head.

after listening to this album a few times, i want to say that it's going to be my favorite album by them. the fact that they could possibly have their 8th release be their best album, is incredible. young robot is a jam, and the middle of the album punch... deception, inspire the liars, and philosopher king, is by far my favorite stretch in their entire discography. tilian's performance in the former two is just so good, and PK is impossible not to headbang along with. tilian's emotion and pop sensibility really shines on exposed/betrayed by the game. there's a couple iffy moments like the intro to here comes the winner, and petting zoo justice/chocolate jackalope weren't quite perfectly executed. but, i would give the album a 9/10. very good and i can't stop listening to it!

In Here Comes the Winner, is there a Mess line that goes "you smell like sphincter" or am I mishearing that?

Please god let that be it.

I mean, risecore was just a term I used for lack of a better word and that I assumed people would understand what I was getting at. Maybe I should have said "It's interesting that this band is getting praised for playing a genre that generally seems to get shit on here", because that's essentially what I meant.

  23. disambigujason

that would be correct haha. there's a few other lines throughout the album that are definitely more cringe-worthy though.

when i think of risecore i think of heavier bands like of mice and men or like moths to flame, in which case i would've misinterpreted you. i'll say what primarily brings me to DGD, whether their first album or last, is the fun guitar work and vocal melodies. i think they've consistently been one of the best bands in our scene at writing vocal melodies, and are certainly creative guitarists. as far as playing in a genre that generally gets shit on, i've never understood why that's so. I've always been a big fan of their post-hardcore peers of the past ~10 years, and i think the ones that are still around put out great stuff, like silverstein. i guess there could be younger bands, or just bad older ones, that are more generic (like OM&M and LMTF, imo), and contribute to the stigma is its an immature/bad genre, but id vehemently disagree with that. that said, its certainly a dying one, so that makes me extra excited for each DGD release.

Yeah, that makes sense. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad people dig this. To me, though, it's so ultra cheesy in a way I'm unable to get past. It reminds me of a less bad version of Issues, which I think is one of the absolute worst bands to gain popularity recently. Admittedly I'm not much a fan of the genre in general, though I do agree with you that Silverstein still puts out excellent material.

Well, what I'm saying is, I don't think they are in that genre at all. They don't remind me of bands like Issues, Of Mice & Men, etc. They remind me more of bands like, The Fall of Troy, or Pierce the Veil. It's post-hardcore, not metalcore, there's definitely a big difference, but I could see why some people combine the two, if you're not into the genre at all maybe it sounds the same. But, I also dislike the "risecore" type of bands, and I don't think DGD fits into that stereotype at all, they are much more unique.
