After my second listen I'm officially in the "I fucking love this album" now mode. Seriously Deception is such a powerful Tilian performance.
I like this album, hate to admit it, but I do. The lyrics are definitely weak for DGD standards. Tilian trying to tap into Mess's weirdness is really cringey.
It's certainly not for everyone, especially if lyrics are the key component for someone liking an album. But if it's not a deal breaker then they should give it a shot. They can get super cringey however I think they really were going for that route instead of making it super serious, which a lot of people probably wish they did. It's a nice juxtaposition for a change, even if there are lines on here I wouldn't want to repeat out loud in a car with family.
as someone who does weigh lyrics heavily, i've come to like the juxtaposition of tilian's serious lyrics with mess's nonsense ones. on previous records i could pretend-convince myself they maybe meant something/overlook it and appreciate the sound itself, because i love mess's screams. the more vulgar ones on this record are more distracting than usual though and take away from the songs for me. that said, its so damn good i aint even mad. how tilian could come up with so many incredible melodies is something to behold.
tillian has literally always been a fucking horrible lyricist, whether that was with tides of man or dgd the man has never written a good song, lyrically, in his life. but if you're listening to dgd for lyrics i gotta ask, why?
anyway im listening now and so far its cool. i think acceptance speech is their best post-happiness record (happiness being their best by a pretty wide margin) and IG was too much of the same to really stand out for me. so for this seems to feel a little different than both AS and IG so im digging it.
this is the best theyve sounded since happiness tbh. i may not like most of the albums he works on but kris crummett is a great producer
Eh. With TOM, the lyrics were just mediocre. There are plenty of other well regarded bands with lyrics no better than what's found on Dreamhouse. Even his AS lyrics weren't quite abysmal. It really started with IG, as far as them being just off the charts cringey.
this album sounds nice. I just like what they were doing with their guitar tones on happiness alot more. They sounded very strat-y. And I miss the clean chimy tones they would do
Me too. I think Will uses a Les Paul now so it's gonna sound heavier in general, but "strat-y" is such a good way of describing happiness! IMO Zac Garren contributed a lot to that sound 'cause he has that choppy style that is all over that album (which is still their best!)
So mean...I mean it's true but damn you went in lmao. I think Mothership is Tilian's worst lyrical work probably ever. It's slowly been getting worse since TOM imo. I've probably listened to this album too many times...I'm not gonna clarify what too many is just cause it's like...an embarrassing amount...but I'm surprised Deception isn't getting more love! I think there's only like three tracks on this record that I don't love yet...looking at you, Petting Zoo Justice.
When I say the lyrics on here are bad, I mean that it sounds like Tilian is trying to go the funny -nonsense route that Jon has been on since day 1. And I'm saying I liked it better when he stuck with his really vanilla lyrics
I don't care much for petting zoo or Flossie dickie bounce, tho each have their moments. Frozen one, deception, and betrayed are probably my top 3.
I would love to hear what Will would do with an Ibanez tuned down. Would pay money to just sit in a room and listen to him improv and riff metal. \m/
Tilian's lyrics honestly do not phase me at all. There were two awful ones that stuck out to me that I can remember - one about doing his hair and another one where he says a girl is a "social whore" - the others must either go over my head, pass my (low?) bar or I just accept them for what they are (like the "my body" part of Chocolate Jackalope - weird but who cares 'cause the music tho).
I have never listened to this band for the lyrical quality haha. I got into them through Jonny Craig (I know, I know...) so what I look for is the technicality, melodies, and experimentation. I absolutely am loving Young Robot. Tillian's parts are constantly stuck in my head. Definitely my go to song right now.
Deception is great. I don't like that it loses all momentum for 2 minutes in the middle. IM liking Inspire the Liars rn
