I like the new song, needs more Will Swan goodness though. Everyone go listen to the new Sianvar album btw. I want some of that on Mothership.
This song shreds. Like, if this is how the album is going to sound it could be the best of their three with Tillian.
New song is amazing - Feels like they're continuing the vibe from 'Variation' from the last record. Zac Garren does guitar on it too, according to Strawberry Girls' twitter; I wonder which headphone is him & which is Will, because whoever is on the left just shreds like fuck the whole fucking song! Whoever is on the right is great too, but that chorus guitar on the left IMO seems to be one of the most technical guitar parts the band has ever done!!!
LOL at this facebook comment on the new song post: "I enjoyed the song but what's up with the random lyric about Tomato soup? I'm a newish fan. Is this a normal thing?" You've been Mess'd breh!
I ldig this song so much. Its better than most of IG for me and I really liked IG a lot. Probably one of the best they've released with Tilian on vocals and I'm glad to see how aggressive they decided to go with this.
I don't understand how people still complain about Mess' lyrics. That's his style that hasn't changed since the get-go. The only way he was going to play in the band was if he could make up his own lyrics. I think it's absolutely hilarious. New song shreds and yes, this could be the best album of the three with vocalist T-Money.
I mean just because it's his style and he hasn't changed doesn't mean people have to like it or avoid criticism towards. His lyrics are (at least in my opinion) the worst I've ever heard/seen; at least from a band who I listen to and enjoy. His lyrics are like placeholder lyrics I write to figure out flow and melody, but then change because they make no sense.
What exactly do you mean? Are you saying you can't actually criticize Mess because his lyrics are non-sense, or?
Essentially, yeah. That doesn't mean you can't justifiably hate them, but "they're nonsense" is kind of empty and pointless. Ultimately the point of a critique is to identify flaws - things that ought to be improved. Calling his lyrics nonsense doesn't really qualify 'cause they're supposed to be nonsense, they achieve their goal perfectly. It's like criticizing a turd for not being edible.
Ah, okay. I can see that. But at the same time, I kind of view all writing as just writing. Like, when Relient k released their album Collapsible Lung a lot of people said "It was meant to be empty" as a way to justify how bad the album was, and even going as far as to say that the emptiness was made good by intent. I don't quite think that intent to be bad, or in this case, to be nonsense quite exonerates things from critique. I'm coming from a more broad "writing is writing" point of view than "for the specific intent it succeeds" though, so I get what you're saying though. I will say though, I didn't think Mess's writing on early records (where he at least seemed to be trying to write about things instead of nonsense) were good at all either. So my disliking of his writing definitely stretches beyond the nonsense of a lot of it.
Tillians shouty vocals at the beginning and backing Mess' was pretty cool sounding. The song was fun overall but I hated the first pre chorus part. It was like 5 seconds but it sounded terrible. I hate when an otherwise decent song has a part that irks me
He's always been the same IMO. The fun for me is trying to figure out what the meaning is (if any) of his parts, but he does, by his own admission, have a lot of inside jokes in the lyrics that no-one is ever gonna get. He is the member that takes this band to another level - as good as Will, Matt & Tim are, there are lots of good instrumentalists in this scene. Jon Mess is inimitable! Edit: LOL, I don't even like this comment I made - the instrumentals are light-years ahead of anything else in this scene so I don't wanna downplay Will, Matt & Tim at all!!!
